Habitudes
Habit builder for iPhone and iPad framed as a 60-repetition quest
The first two were a close call. Habitify comes first as the plain tracker that runs on iPhone, Android, Mac and the web. Finch's core is free and its iPhone and iPad app has about 760,000 ratings, but it is a self-care app built around a virtual pet, on phones only. Table Habit is third for people who want a free tracker with no account: it is open source, on phones and desktops. OpenHabitTracker narrowly missed: it is free too and adds a web app, but syncs only through a Docker server you host. HabitKit needs no account either, but stops at four habits unless you pay and stays on one phone.

Habitify lays habits out across the day with reminders and shows how consistently you keep them through a calendar, streak counts and completion rates. It runs on iPhone, Android, Mac and the web, and the free plan syncs between them. On the US App Store, Plus is $29.99 a year for unlimited habits, and Pro is $49.99 a year with calendar and health app sync, automation and API access. Its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.6 from about 7,100 ratings. Know the limits: the free plan stops at 3 active habits and 1 reminder per habit, Plus is sold by the year only, and the vendor's web pricing page shows a different offer, a single Premium plan at $2.49 a month billed annually or $59.99 once.

Finch ties daily goals to a virtual pet bird: checking off goals and self-care activities earns energy that sends the bird on adventures, alongside guided reflections, mood check-ins, breathing exercises and a focus timer. The core features are free on iPhone and Android, and its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.9 from about 760,000 ratings. It is second because it is a self-care app more than a plain tracker, and it runs on phones only: no web or desktop version is listed. Finch Plus adds more reflection prompts, activities and timer options, and the App Store lists it from $5.99 to $69.99 without billing periods, so check the offer shown in the app before subscribing.

Table Habit is a free, open-source habit tracker with every feature on Android, iPhone, Mac, Windows and Linux and no ads, in-app purchases or account. Each habit earns a score that rises as you keep to it, for habits to build and habits to avoid, with a check-in heatmap and charts on each habit's page. It works offline, and devices can sync through a WebDAV server such as Nextcloud or Koofr. It is third because it asks more of you than the two above: that server is the only way to sync and you provide it yourself, home screen widgets are not yet released, and there is no web version. It is a one-person project supported by donations.

Garder ou faire
A habit tracker at its plainest is a list of habits, a tick for each day and a count of the streak. The hard part is small but real: a nudge on your phone at the right time, and a widget you see without opening anything.

Four habit trackers built on four different ideas of what keeps a habit going: reminders and data, an unbroken streak, a game or a goal. Each pick says who it suits, what it costs and where it stops.
