Who each one suits

Automate

  • Android users who prefer drawing an automation as a flowchart
  • Changing device settings or sending messages by time, place or event
  • Trying every feature before paying, since the free edition leaves none out

IFTTT

  • Personal and smart-home automations with one trigger and one action
  • People who prefer switching on ready-made automations to building them
  • A low-cost paid plan priced per account rather than per run

Worth knowing

Automate

  • Android only: the FAQ says there is no PC or online edition and suggests an Android emulator for editing flows on a computer.
  • The free edition runs at most 30 blocks at once, and unconnected blocks inside a running flow count toward the limit.
  • Premium is tied to the Google account that bought it and is verified through the Google Play store app.
  • Battery-saving settings and task-killer apps can pause flows; the FAQ lists the system settings to change.

IFTTT

  • The Free plan allows only 2 Applets, and Pro stops at 20.
  • Multi-action Applets and Webhooks need Pro; queries, filter code and AI services need Pro+.
  • Free Applets run at standard speeds; the fastest speeds are reserved for paid plans.
  • IFTTT's terms say it offers no refunds or credits, and subscriptions renew automatically.

Key features

Automate

Flowchart editor
Automations are drawn by adding and connecting blocks. Beginners configure blocks with predefined options, and experienced users can add expressions, variables and functions.
More than 400 building blocks
Blocks cover actions, conditions, event triggers and loops for files, messages, phone calls, the camera, audio and device settings such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and NFC.
Context triggers
Flows can react to the time of day, location through geofencing, calendar events, the app currently open, the connected Wi-Fi network, battery level and physical activity.
App and web integration
Automate works with apps that support the Locale/Tasker plug-in API, can fall back on screen scraping and simulated input, and calls online services over HTTP, including webhooks.
Community flows
Complete flows that other users have made and shared can be downloaded from a community section inside the app, then run or edited.
Files and remote storage
Blocks copy, move, rename and delete files on the device, SD card and USB drives, handle zip archives, and upload or download through Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive and FTP.

IFTTT

Applets
An Applet links a trigger in one service to an action in another. Published Applets can be switched on as they are, or you can build your own.
1,000+ services
IFTTT lists more than 1,000 services, from apps such as Google Sheets, Slack and Notion to smart-home brands such as Philips Hue, Ring and LIFX.
Multi-action Applets and Webhooks
Pro and Pro+ Applets can run several actions from one trigger and can use Webhooks to reach services IFTTT does not list. Neither is part of the Free plan.
Queries and filter code
Pro+ adds queries and filter code to Applets and lets you connect more than one account for the same service.
Chat Create and MCP
Chat Create builds an automation from a written prompt, and the IFTTT MCP server connects AI tools to your services and automations. AI services inside Applets need Pro+.
Mobile apps
The iOS and Android apps create and manage Applets and add device triggers such as location, photos and notifications. Mobile access is included on the Free plan.
