Open-source AI dictation with free local models and optional cloud
Speak instead of type: dictation apps that turn speech into clean text in any app.
These three suit different people more than they compete. Wispr Flow comes first: it cleans up what you say in any app on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, and its iPhone and iPad app has about 16,700 ratings against about 840 for Superwhisper's. Superwhisper is second for free dictation that stays on the device. OpenWhispr is third as the open-source choice that also runs on Linux. Typeless narrowly missed: it does a similar job to Wispr Flow at the same $12 a month billed yearly and adds Linux, but its free weekly limit is not published and paying monthly costs $30.
Free plan · from $12/mo
For: Most people
Wispr Flow turns speech into text in whatever app you are typing in, on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, in 100+ languages. It removes filler words and self-corrections, adds punctuation and learns the names and jargon you use. The free plan covers 2,000 words a week on desktop and 1,000 on mobile, with no credit card, and Pro is $12 per user a month, billed annually, or $15 billed monthly. Its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.8 from about 16,700 ratings. Know the limits: the weekly word caps stay until you pay, the Notetaker for meetings runs on Mac and Windows only, and no Linux app is listed.
iPhone and iPad app: 4.8 out of 5 on the App Store
Wispr Flow pricing and detailsFree plan · from $8.49/mo
For: People who want free dictation that stays on the device
Superwhisper runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, and its free plan gives unlimited dictation with local Whisper models, so it works offline and audio is not uploaded. Custom vocabulary and text replacements are free too. Pro is $8.49 a month or $84.99 a year, less than Wispr Flow's Pro, and a lifetime license is $249.99. Its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.4 from about 840 ratings. It is second because the free plan stops short of cleaning up what you say: it allows 2 modes, without AI processing, and AI modes, cloud voice models and file transcription need Pro. The cloud models send audio to hosted servers, and a Linux version is listed as coming soon.
iPhone and iPad app: 4.4 out of 5 on the App Store
Superwhisper pricing and detailsFree plan · from $6.67/mo
For: Linux users, and anyone who wants open-source software
OpenWhispr is open source and runs on Linux as well as Mac and Windows, where neither app above has a Linux version. Its free plan gives unlimited dictation with local Whisper and Parakeet models, which work offline, plus 2,000 OpenWhispr Cloud words a week and 5 hours of meeting recordings a month, captured without a bot joining the call. Pro is $6.67 per user a month, billed annually at $80, or $8 billed monthly, less than either app above. It is third because it reaches fewer phones than Superwhisper: the iPhone and iPad app starts on Pro, as does device sync, and no Android app is listed. Local model speed depends on your hardware, and cloud processing needs an internet connection.
