19 of them are free or have a free plan, and 8 more let you try before paying. Everything in this guide comes from their own pages and our grades.
- 2
Paid plans start at $8 a month in the middle
From $4.20 (Weesper Neon Flow) to $12 (Monologue), going by what each one's paid plans start at.
- 3
Best value: Letterly, TypeWhisper, Handy and Google AI Edge Eloquent
Nothing on our chart scores higher than these without costing more.
- 4
6 of 28 have iPhone and Android apps
2 run in a web browser and 19 have a Windows app. Check the one you need before you fall for anything.
- 5
The middle GPA is 2.7
8 score 3.0 or higher. The highest is OpenWhispr, at 3.2.
- 6
Best free option: OpenWhispr
OpenWhispr has the highest GPA of the free ones, 3.2. Open-source dictation with free local models and meeting notes.
- 7
28 worth keeping, 0 you could make
By our keep-or-make rules, 28 do something you couldn't reasonably build yourself, 0 are simple enough to make with an AI app builder, and 0 are a close call.
Part 02 · Top three
Our top three
The three we'd look at first, and who each one suits
The three voice dictation apps we'd look at first. First place suits the most people; second and third are the best picks for the people it leaves out. Each has an Insider's Guide of its own.
1st
2.8GPAWispr Flow
Free plan · from $12/mo
For: Most people
Wispr Flow turns speech into text in whatever app you are typing in, on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, in 100+ languages. It removes filler words and self-corrections, adds punctuation and learns the names and jargon you use. The free plan covers 2,000 words a week on desktop and 1,000 on mobile, with no credit card, and Pro is $12 per user a month, billed annually, or $15 billed monthly. Its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.8 from about 16,700 ratings. Know the limits: the weekly word caps stay until you pay, the Notetaker for meetings runs on Mac and Windows only, and no Linux app is listed.
The Wispr Flow Insider’s Guide2nd
2.8GPASuperwhisper
Free plan · from $8.49/mo
For: People who want free dictation that stays on the device
Superwhisper runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, and its free plan gives unlimited dictation with local Whisper models, so it works offline and audio is not uploaded. Custom vocabulary and text replacements are free too. Pro is $8.49 a month or $84.99 a year, less than Wispr Flow's Pro, and a lifetime license is $249.99. Its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.4 from about 840 ratings. It is second because the free plan stops short of cleaning up what you say: it allows 2 modes, without AI processing, and AI modes, cloud voice models and file transcription need Pro. The cloud models send audio to hosted servers, and a Linux version is listed as coming soon.
The Superwhisper Insider’s Guide3rd
3.2GPAOpenWhispr
Free plan · from $6.67/mo
For: Linux users, and anyone who wants open-source software
OpenWhispr is open source and runs on Linux as well as Mac and Windows, where neither app above has a Linux version. Its free plan gives unlimited dictation with local Whisper and Parakeet models, which work offline, plus 2,000 OpenWhispr Cloud words a week and 5 hours of meeting recordings a month, captured without a bot joining the call. Pro is $6.67 per user a month, billed annually at $80, or $8 billed monthly, less than either app above. It is third because it reaches fewer phones than Superwhisper: the iPhone and iPad app starts on Pro, as does device sync, and no Android app is listed. Local model speed depends on your hardware, and cloud processing needs an internet connection.

Part 05 · Keep or make
Keep or make?
Which are worth paying for, and which you could make yourself
0
Simple enough to make yourself, of 28
Some software does something you couldn’t reasonably build yourself. Some is simple enough that an AI app builder could make the core of it in an afternoon. Here’s where voice dictation apps land, by the same rules for every tool.
28
Keep it
It does something you could not reasonably make for yourself, or it costs nothing.
0
Your call
You could make the core of it, and you would give something up.
0
You could make this
What it does is the kind of thing an AI app builder makes well, and it charges every month.
Worth keeping
OpenWhispr
To replace OpenWhispr you would be making dictation that types into any app on your computer. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
TypeWhisper
To replace TypeWhisper you would be making dictation that types into any app on your computer. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
FluidVoice
FluidVoice is free, so making your own would save you nothing.
Google AI Edge Eloquent
Google AI Edge Eloquent is free, so making your own would save you nothing.
