Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 2 of the 27 other voice dictation apps we grade
Braina is desktop software from Brainasoft that combines voice dictation with a voice-controlled personal assistant and an interface for large language models. The paid editions type what you say into any program or website, respond to spoken commands for editing and automation, and transcribe audio and video files on the computer. The free Lite edition covers voice commands and AI chat but leaves out dictation, and paid licenses are sold for fixed terms of one to three years.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Braina, taken from its own pages and our grades.
- 1
Best for dictation plus voice control of a Windows PC
Braina is dictation, a voice assistant and an AI chat window in one desktop program, mostly for Windows.
- 2
Paid plans start at $8.25 a month when paid by the year for each person
As its pricing page puts it: $99 for a 1-year license on 1 Windows PC.
- 3
There is a free plan
Braina Lite is free on 1 Windows or macOS computer: voice commands, AI chat with 300 Advanced AI Credits, local language models and offline audio transcription. It has no dictation.
- 4
It runs on 2 platforms
macOS and Windows.
- 5
Dictation in any program
With dictation mode on, speech is typed into whichever field has focus, in Word, Outlook, Gmail, Google Docs or other software. No voice training or user profiles are needed. Paid editions only.
- 6
Spoken editing commands
Commands such as "new paragraph", "delete that", "undo" and "change language to German" edit and navigate while dictating, alongside a list of spoken punctuation marks.
- 7
Custom vocabulary and templates
Teach Braina uncommon names, addresses and technical jargon, and set up dictation templates and canned answers. The vendor says it already recognizes most medical, legal and scientific terms.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 2 of 27
That is against the other voice dictation apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Braina you would be making dictation that types into any app on your computer. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for dictation plus voice control of a Windows PC
Braina is dictation, a voice assistant and an AI chat window in one desktop program, mostly for Windows. Pro types what you say into any software for $99 a year. But the free Lite edition has no dictation, licenses run for fixed terms, a Mac needs Pro Plus at $199 for two years, the phone apps are only microphones, and refunds carry a 12% deduction.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Pro is $99 for a year on one Windows PC, about $8.25 a month, which is the ordinary middle of this category. It's a fixed term, not a licence you keep, and a Mac needs Pro Plus at $199 for two years. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Braina Lite is free on one computer, with voice commands, AI chat on 300 credits and offline audio transcription. It leaves out dictation, which is the thing people come here for. |
| Features | B | Dictation into any program with spoken commands like "new paragraph" and "delete that", custom vocabulary and templates, plus a voice assistant that opens apps and runs macros, AI chat with local models and offline file transcription. No gap in the core job. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record, but you install it and talk: the vendor says there's no voice training and no user profiles to build before you start dictating. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | Computers only, and even then Pro is Windows while macOS needs Pro Plus. The Android and iOS apps are just wireless microphones for the desktop program, not dictation apps. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Braina is for
- Fits if you're on Windows and want to dictate and also control the PC by voice
- Works for medical, legal or technical writing, since you can teach it custom vocabulary
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want free dictation, because the Lite edition leaves dictation out
- Pricey if you're on a Mac, since macOS support starts at Pro Plus, $199 for 2 years
- Not for you if you want to dictate on your phone, as the mobile apps are just microphones for the desktop
- Watch out: licenses run for fixed terms of 1, 2 or 3 years, so you pay again when the term ends
- Watch out: refunds must be asked for within 7 days and have 12% deducted, and the Pro Plus offer always ends tomorrow
Good to know
Good for
- Windows users who want dictation together with voice control of the PC
- People who want dictation, AI chat and automation in one program
- Dictating specialist vocabulary with custom words and templates
Worth knowing
- The free Lite edition does not include dictation; that starts with Pro at $99 for one year.
- Licenses run for fixed terms of 1, 2 or 3 years, and Pro is Windows only: macOS support, on Apple Silicon, needs Pro Plus or Pro Ultra.
- Refunds must be requested within 7 days, apply only to a first purchase of up to 3 licenses, and have 12% deducted.
- The Android and iOS apps are remote microphones for the desktop program, not standalone dictation apps.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Braina you would be making dictation that types into any app on your computer. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 20 of the 27 other voice dictation apps grade higher. It costs $99 a year.
What you could not
- Dictation that types into any app on your computer.
- An AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make.
- Connections to other products, each kept working as those products change.
- Speech turned into text you can trust.
- A real app for macOS and Windows. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Braina’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
