Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.2

GPA, above 1 of the 27 other voice dictation apps we grade

Monologue is a voice app from Every for Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. It dictates formatted text into any app, records voice notes that are transcribed and summarized, and on Mac can capture both sides of a meeting without a bot joining the call. Saved notes sync across devices and can be read by AI agents through MCP, a command-line tool and a public API.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Monologue, taken from its own pages and our grades.

No rating on record, but there's nothing to build: hold a shortcut on the Mac, or switch to the Monologue keyboard on the iPhone, and talk.

The report card

Best for dictation and voice notes across Apple devices

Monologue is dictation, voice notes and bot-free meeting notes in one app for Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. Pro is $12 a month billed yearly, and there's no cheaper plan if you only want dictation. The trial ends at 1,000 words and 10 notes, there's no Windows or Android app, the web app can't record, and formatting needs a connection.

ToolGPA report cardMonologueGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyDPro is $12 a month billed annually, so $144 up front, or $15 month to month. That puts it in the dearest tenth of this category, where the usual starting price is about $8 a month, and there's no cheaper plan for people who only want dictation.
Free plan and trialCThere's no free plan, just a trial of 1,000 dictation words and 10 recorded notes, which is an afternoon at most. Nothing on record says whether it asks for a card. After that it's Pro or the wider Every bundle at $24 a month.
FeaturesBIt covers the whole job and a little beyond: 100+ languages with modes for chat, email, notes and code, a personal dictionary, voice notes with speaker-separated transcripts and summaries, and a Mac that records both sides of a call without a bot. Letterly, Wispr Flow and MacWhisper reach just as far.
Ease of useBNo rating on record, but there's nothing to build: hold a shortcut on the Mac, or switch to the Monologue keyboard on the iPhone, and talk. Modes pick the formatting for whichever app you're in.
Platforms and integrationsCMac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, which is one family of devices and no more: no Windows, no Android. The web app reviews notes but can't record them. It does open up to agents through MCP, a command-line tool and a read-only API.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Monologue is for

  • Fits if you use a Mac, an iPhone and an Apple Watch and want one dictation app across them
  • Works for meeting notes on a Mac when you don't want a bot joining the call

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you use Windows or Android, as there are no apps for either
  • Tight if you're hoping to stay free, since the trial stops at 1,000 words and 10 notes
  • Pricey if dictation is all you want, at $12 a month billed yearly or $15 monthly, with no smaller plan
  • Not for you if you want tidy text with no connection, because offline output is a raw transcript
  • Watch out: local transcription needs an Apple silicon Mac, and the web app can't record new notes

Good to know

Good for

  • People who work across Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch
  • Recording meetings without a bot joining the call
  • Handing voice notes and transcripts to AI agents

Worth knowing

  • Apple devices only: Monologue does not offer Windows or Android apps.
  • The free trial stops at 1,000 dictation words and 10 recorded notes; after that a Pro or Every subscription is needed.
  • Local transcription works only on Apple silicon Macs, and smart formatting still needs an internet connection.
  • The web app reviews and organizes notes but cannot record new ones.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Monologue you would be making dictation that types into any app on your computer. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 26 of the 27 other voice dictation apps grade higher. It costs $144 a year.

What you could not

  • Dictation that types into any app on your computer.
  • A bot that joins your calls and turns the talk into notes.
  • Speech turned into text you can trust.
  • Apps for macOS and iOS that stay in step with each other.
  • It plugs into other products, Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor among them, and has an API.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • Hooks into the device itself: an Apple Watch app.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Monologue’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
