Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.6

GPA, above 8 of the 27 other voice dictation apps we grade

FUTO Voice Input is an Android app that adds speech-to-text to keyboards and apps that support Android's standard voice input APIs. Recognition is based on OpenAI's Whisper model and runs entirely on the phone, and FUTO says recordings are never saved or sent anywhere. The app can be used without paying; FUTO asks people who find it useful to buy a one-time license, which is also valid for FUTO Keyboard.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about FUTO Voice Input, taken from its own pages and our grades.

  1. 1

Best for offline voice typing on an Android phone

FUTO Voice Input adds speech-to-text to Android keyboards, worked out on the phone with nothing saved or sent.

  2. 2

    What it costs

Paid plans start at $7 one-time through FUTO Pay ($9.99 as a Google Play in-app purchase).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

The app works without a license. It shows an Unpaid label and a reminder that can be postponed, and FUTO asks people who find it useful to pay.

  4. 4

    It runs on Android

    Android.

  5. 5

Voice input for keyboards and apps

It answers Android's standard speech recognition intent with a floating window, and it acts as a voice input method that opens in place of the keyboard when a compatible keyboard calls it.

  6. 6

    Fully on-device recognition

All processing happens offline on the phone using Whisper models. FUTO says recordings are never saved or sent anywhere, and the app goes online only to download optional models.

  7. 7

    English and multilingual models

English-only and multilingual models each come in three sizes, with 39, 74 or 244 million parameters. Smaller models respond faster and larger ones are more accurate.

  8. 8

    A 2.6 GPA, above 8 of 27

That is against the other voice dictation apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Keep it

To replace FUTO Voice Input you would be making dictation that types into any app on your computer. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card

Best for offline voice typing on an Android phone

FUTO Voice Input adds speech-to-text to Android keyboards, worked out on the phone with nothing saved or sent. You can use it without paying, and a license is $7 once. But it doesn't work with Gboard or Samsung Keyboard, only 17 languages are offered by default, there's no clean-up or custom vocabulary, and FUTO says no major updates are expected.

ToolGPA report cardFUTO Voice InputGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAA license is $7 once through FUTO Pay, or $9.99 as a Google Play purchase, and the same license covers FUTO Keyboard. Dictation apps here mostly want $8 or so every month, so this is less than one month of the usual rate, paid once.
Free plan and trialAThe app works with no license at all. You get an Unpaid label and a reminder asking you to consider paying, and you can postpone it. Nothing is switched off and no feature is held back, so you could stay on it for good.
FeaturesCIt transcribes on the phone and stops there: English and multilingual Whisper models in three sizes, automatic language detection, nothing saved or sent. The listing's own gaps are real, though. No Gboard or Samsung Keyboard, only 17 languages by default, and no clean-up or custom vocabulary.
Ease of useCNo rating on record. There's groundwork before you dictate a word: install from Play, F-Droid or a 70 MB APK, pick and download a model, and get a keyboard that will call it, such as HeliBoard or SwiftKey, because your stock keyboard won't.
Platforms and integrationsDAndroid, and only Android. Nothing for iPhone and nothing for a computer. It hooks into FUTO Keyboard, HeliBoard, FlorisBoard, AnySoftKeyboard, SwiftKey and Grammarly, but that's all on the one phone.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.6

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who FUTO Voice Input is for

  • Fits if you want voice typing on Android that works with no signal at all
  • Works for HeliBoard, FlorisBoard or SwiftKey users who want a mic that isn't Google's

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you're sticking with Gboard or Samsung Keyboard, because it doesn't work with either
  • Not for you if you want an app that keeps growing, as FUTO's work has largely moved to FUTO Keyboard
  • Too light for anyone who wants filler words removed or their own vocabulary taught
  • Tight if you speak a less common language, since only 17 are offered by default
  • Skip it if you're on iPhone or a computer, as it's Android only, and Android's SpeechRecognizer API isn't supported yet

Good to know

Good for

  • Android users who want voice typing that works with no connection
  • People using keyboards such as HeliBoard, FlorisBoard or SwiftKey
  • Users who do not want dictation sent to a cloud service

Worth knowing

  • It is Android only and does not work with Gboard or Samsung Keyboard, which are tied to their own voice input.
  • The README says development has largely shifted to FUTO Keyboard, and the app notes that no major updates are expected.
  • Only 17 languages are offered by default; others are hidden because the smaller Whisper models handle them poorly.
  • The source code is under the FUTO Source First License 1.0, and Android's SpeechRecognizer API is not supported yet.

Ways to pay less

Other voice dictation apps it is graded above

FUTO Voice Input's GPA of 2.6 is higher than 8 of the 27 other voice dictation apps we grade, and level with 5.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace FUTO Voice Input you would be making dictation that types into any app on your computer. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 14 of the 27 other voice dictation apps grade higher. It costs $7, paid once.

What you could not

  • Dictation that types into any app on your computer.
  • A real app for Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It plugs into other products, FUTO Keyboard, HeliBoard and FlorisBoard among them.

What this rests on. FUTO Voice Input’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
