Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.0

GPA, above 20 of the 27 other voice dictation apps we grade

Google AI Edge Eloquent is a free dictation app from Google for iPhone, iPad and Mac. It transcribes speech with Gemma-based models that run on the device, then removes filler words and self-corrections to produce clean text. It works offline, has no usage limits or subscription, and builds a personal vocabulary list, optionally from your Google account data. Only English is officially supported.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Google AI Edge Eloquent, taken from its own pages and our grades.

It transcribes on the device, drops the ums and false starts, and counts no minutes.

The report card

Best for free, unlimited dictation on iPhone and Mac

Eloquent is Google's free dictation app for iPhone, iPad and Mac. It transcribes on the device, drops the ums and false starts, and counts no minutes. But English is the only supported language, the iPhone version copies text to the clipboard for you to paste, there's no Windows, Android or web version, and some optional features need the cloud.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAFree, with no subscription and no usage limits, in a category where the usual rate is about $8 a month. The US App Store listing shows a price of $0 and no in-app purchases at all.
Free plan and trialAThe complete app is the free one: on-device transcription, the automatic polish and the personal dictionary, with no minutes counted. There's no paid plan sitting above it, so nothing is being held back for later.
FeaturesCThe basics plus clean-up: it transcribes on the device, cuts filler and self-corrections, offers text styles and builds a dictionary from your own words. The listing names the gaps: English only, the iPhone keyboard still coming soon, and some advanced features need the cloud.
Ease of useBNo rating on record yet, but there's nothing to set up: no plan to choose, no account needed, no minutes to watch. Open it and talk. On iPhone you then paste what it copied, which is one step more than a keyboard would be.
Platforms and integrationsCiPhone, iPad and Mac, and that's one family of devices. Google says it's still evaluating other platforms, so no Windows, Android or web. The one outside hook is your Google account, which can feed words from Gmail into the dictionary.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.0

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
