Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 2 of the 27 other voice dictation apps we grade
Dictato is a menu bar dictation app for Apple Silicon Macs. Hold a hotkey, speak, and proofread text is pasted at the cursor, with punctuation, paragraphs and number formatting applied by models that run on the Mac. Four speech engines are available, and profiles switch tone, language and engine per app or website. It is sold as a one-time lifetime license after a 7-day trial, with no account, cloud service or usage limit.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Dictato, taken from its own pages and our grades.
No store rating on record, but there's no account to make and it picks a speech engine for your Mac.

- 5
Hold-to-talk dictation at the cursor
Hold a hotkey, or tap to toggle, and the finished text is pasted wherever the cursor is in any app that accepts a paste. Recording continues until the key is released, with no time limit.
- 6
On-device proofreading
Punctuation, capitals, paragraph breaks and filler words are handled before the text is pasted, and dates, times and amounts are formatted, so a spoken amount comes out as 25 €.
- 7
Four speech engines
Parakeet covers 24 mostly European languages, Whisper covers 99 and Qwen3 covers 26, while Apple SpeechAnalyzer is used on macOS 26 with Apple Intelligence. Dictato picks a default for the Mac.

The report card
Best for private, pay-once dictation on a newer Mac
Dictato is a menu bar app that turns what you say into proofread text without anything leaving your Mac. It's €19.99 once after a 7-day trial, with no account and no usage limit. But it runs only on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 14 or later, it won't transcribe existing audio files, the price is in euros only, and auto-translate needs macOS 26.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | €19.99 once, VAT included, for a lifetime licence with updates. That's a fifth of a year on this category's $8.33-a-month middle plan, and you keep it. One Mac at a time, movable 3 times in 30 days. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free plan. The full app runs for 7 days with no card needed, then it's buy or stop. There's a 14-day refund afterwards, but that isn't free use. |
| Features | C | Live dictation is covered: four speech engines, proofread text at the cursor, profiles per app and website, nine tones, translation, vocabulary and searchable history. But that's all it does, and its own listing says it won't transcribe existing audio files. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record, but there's no account to make and it picks a speech engine for your Mac. Tone rewrites want a one-time 3.4 GB model download first. |
| Platforms and integrations | D | One operating system, and not all of it: Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later, with Intel Macs unsupported, no Windows, no phone app and no integrations listed. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Dictato is for
- Fits if you want dictation that stays on an Apple Silicon Mac, with no account and no cloud
- Makes sense if you'd rather pay €19.99 once than a monthly subscription
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you have an Intel Mac, a Windows PC or want it on your phone, as it's Apple Silicon only
- Not for you if you need recordings turned into text, because it doesn't transcribe audio files
- Tight if you're on macOS 14 or 15 and want auto-translate, which needs macOS 26
- Watch out: tone rewrites need a one-time 3.4 GB model download, and the price is listed in euros only
- Watch out: a license covers one Mac at a time and can move only 3 times in 30 days
Good to know
Good for
- Mac users who want dictation that never leaves the device
- Buyers who prefer a low one-time price to a subscription
- People who switch language or tone between apps and websites
Worth knowing
- It runs only on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 14 or later; Intel Macs are not supported and there are no Windows or mobile apps.
- It is live dictation only and does not transcribe existing audio files.
- A license covers one Mac at a time, with up to 3 moves per 30 days, and the price is listed in euros only.
- Auto-translate needs macOS 26, and tone rewrites need a one-time 3.4 GB model download.

Part 03 · Features
What it does
Its main features, where it runs, what it works with and who makes it
1
Place it runs: macOS
Offline dictation for Apple Silicon Macs with on-device cleanup. Here is what it does, as its own site describes it, and what it covers: works offline, local-first, one-time purchase, AI features, dictation, menu bar app.
But that's all it does, and its own listing says it won't transcribe existing audio files.
- Hold-to-talk dictation at the cursor
- Hold a hotkey, or tap to toggle, and the finished text is pasted wherever the cursor is in any app that accepts a paste. Recording continues until the key is released, with no time limit.
- On-device proofreading
- Punctuation, capitals, paragraph breaks and filler words are handled before the text is pasted, and dates, times and amounts are formatted, so a spoken amount comes out as 25 €.

- Parakeet covers 24 mostly European languages, Whisper covers 99 and Qwen3 covers 26, while Apple SpeechAnalyzer is used on macOS 26 with Apple Intelligence. Dictato picks a default for the Mac.
- Profiles per app and website
- Rules set the tone, language and engine for each app, and for individual websites in Safari, Chrome, Brave, Edge, Arc, Vivaldi and Opera. Nine tones are built in, and custom ones can be written.
- Tone rewrites, translation and vocabulary
- Tones rewrite a dictation as an email, note or list using a Gemma model stored on the Mac. Auto-translate uses Apple's Translation framework, and a vocabulary plus voice commands fix names and jargon.
- Local history with audio
- Each dictation is kept on the Mac with its audio, the raw transcript and the cleaned text, and can be searched in full or replayed. History is never synced and can be switched off.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Dictato you would be making dictation that types into any app on your computer. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 20 of the 27 other voice dictation apps grade higher. It costs $22.40, paid once.
What you could not
- Dictation that types into any app on your computer.
- A native app living in the menu bar.
- A real app for macOS. Something home-made would be a web page.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
What this rests on. Dictato’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
