Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.8

GPA, above 14 of the 27 other voice dictation apps we grade

VoiceInk is a dictation app for macOS that transcribes speech with models running on the Mac, so audio does not have to leave the device. Modes pick the model, language and optional AI cleanup for each app or website, and cloud transcription or enhancement can be added with your own provider API keys. The source code is published under the GPL v3, and the packaged app is sold as a one-time license per number of Macs.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about VoiceInk, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Adding your own API keys only matters if you want cloud clean-up.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for pay-once Mac dictation that stays on the Mac

VoiceInk is Mac dictation you buy once: $25 for one Mac, with speech transcribed on the Mac and Modes that switch settings by app.

  2. 2

    What it costs

Paid plans start at $25 one-time, for 1 Mac.

  3. 3

    You can try it first

7-day free trial of the Mac app, started during onboarding.

  4. 4

    It runs on 2 platforms

    macOS and iOS.

  5. 5

    Local transcription

Speech is transcribed by models that run on the Mac, including Parakeet and Whisper, so audio is processed on the device. Onboarding starts with the Parakeet V3 model.

  6. 6

    Modes and triggers

A Mode sets the transcription model, language, AI enhancement and output, and can switch automatically by app, website, spoken trigger phrase or shortcut.

  7. 7

AI enhancement with your own keys

Optionally send the transcript to a provider you connect, such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini or Groq, to clean up, rewrite or draft a reply. VoiceInk Refine does cleanup locally.

  8. 8

    A 2.8 GPA, above 14 of 27

That is against the other voice dictation apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Keep it

To replace VoiceInk you would be making dictation that types into any app on your computer. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card

Best for pay-once Mac dictation that stays on the Mac

VoiceInk is Mac dictation you buy once: $25 for one Mac, with speech transcribed on the Mac and Modes that switch settings by app. But there's no free version after the 7-day trial, it's Apple only, cloud clean-up needs your own API keys, the iPhone app is licensed separately, and its pages disagree on which macOS it needs.

ToolGPA report cardVoiceInkGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyA$25 once for 1 Mac, $39 for 2 or $49 for 3, with lifetime updates and a 14-day money-back guarantee. A year of the typical dictation subscription here is about $100, so you're paying a quarter of that and then you're done.
Free plan and trialCNo free plan. There's a 7-day trial of the Mac app, started during onboarding, and the listing doesn't say whether it asks for a card. The source code is published under the GPL, but the packaged app is the thing being sold.
FeaturesBLocal Parakeet and Whisper models, Modes that switch by app, website, trigger phrase or shortcut, a dictionary with Smart Replace that learns from your fixes, file transcription and a searchable history. The whole job, but the AI clean-up and cloud models want your own API keys.
Ease of useBNo App Store rating on record for it. Onboarding installs the Parakeet V3 model and you're dictating, with nothing to configure first. Adding your own API keys only matters if you want cloud clean-up.
Platforms and integrationsCMac, plus an iPhone and iPad app licensed separately and free while in beta. So Apple only: no Windows, no Linux, no Android. It does take keys for OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Groq, Deepgram and more.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who VoiceInk is for

  • Fits if you want your speech transcribed on your own Mac and not on someone's server
  • Makes sense if you'd rather pay $25 once than subscribe

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you use Windows, Linux or Android, as it's Mac with an iPhone app in beta
  • Not for you if you have an Intel Mac, because the pricing page says Apple Silicon only
  • Tight if you own several Macs, since Solo covers 1 and you'd need Extended at $49 for 3
  • Watch out: its pages disagree on requirements, macOS 14.4 on the pricing page and macOS 15 in the install docs
  • Watch out: AI clean-up and cloud models need your own API keys, and those requests leave the Mac

Good to know

Good for

  • Mac users who want speech transcribed on their own machine
  • Buyers who prefer a one-time license to a subscription
  • People who want to pick their own transcription and AI providers

Worth knowing

  • A Mac license does not cover the iPhone and iPad app, which is licensed separately and is free while in beta.
  • Vendor pages disagree on requirements: the pricing page says Apple Silicon and macOS 14.4 or later, the install docs say macOS 15 or later.
  • AI enhancement and cloud transcription need your own provider API keys, and those requests leave the Mac.
  • Licenses are capped by device count: 1, 2 or 3 Macs on the personal plans and 10 on the Startup License.

Other voice dictation apps it is graded above

VoiceInk's GPA of 2.8 is higher than 14 of the 27 other voice dictation apps we grade, and level with 5.

It stands best on value for money (A, above 15 of 27) and worst on free plan and trial (C, above 2).

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace VoiceInk you would be making dictation that types into any app on your computer. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It costs $25, paid once. VoiceInk is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.

What you could not

  • Dictation that types into any app on your computer.
  • Speech turned into text you can trust.
  • Apps for macOS and iOS that stay in step with each other.
  • It plugs into other products, OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini among them.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. VoiceInk’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
