Value for money
AIt's free software under the GPL, version 3 or later. Every download on the project page costs nothing, and the only money mentioned is a link to a donation page.
B$99 once, plus tax, with a year of updates included. That's about 16 months of a typical $5.99 a month plan in this category, and you keep the licence. Updates after year one are an optional $49 a year, and the last version you got keeps working if you stop.
Free plan and trial
AAll of it is free: the Windows installer and portable archive, the Linux packages and the macOS installer. There's no paid tier to hold anything back.
CNo free plan. There's a fully featured 30-day trial, and when it ends you can still view and export your notes but not edit them. So you won't lose anything by trying it.
Features
BNested nodes, rich text, code with syntax highlighting, images, embedded files, LaTeX equations and find and replace across the whole tree. Solid. But tables only hold plain text, there's no sync of its own on the listing, and the online manual is described as old and discontinued.
ATrees or sortable lists, tags and attributes that show up as columns, wiki-style links, a rich text editor, a web clipper, and a Global Search with boolean syntax that reads inside attached PDFs and Office files. It also publishes a notebook as a website and encrypts notebooks behind a password.
Ease of use
BInstall it, make a document and start adding nodes. There's no App Store rating on record to go by, so a B is as high as we go. Don't lean on the manual, which the project page calls old and discontinued.
BNo store rating to go on, so a B is our ceiling. It installs like any Windows program and works fully offline. There's a lot of it, though, so expect a while finding your way around perspectives and attributes.
Platforms and integrations
BWindows, Mac and Linux, with a portable Windows build and Linux packages from PPA to Flatpak and Snap. There's no official mobile app. The project page points to SourCherry, a third-party Android project, and the listing shows no integrations.
DWindows only, on Windows 7 or newer. The one thing outside it is a web clipper extension for Chrome, Firefox, Edge and other Chromium browsers. The maker runs no cloud service, and there's no Mac, phone or web version.

Worth knowing

CherryTree

  • There is no official mobile app; the project page points to SourCherry, a third-party Android project.
  • Password protection is available only for single-file storage, and an unprotected copy is extracted to a temporary folder while the document is open.
  • Tables are limited to cells of plain text.
  • The project page describes the online user manual as old and discontinued.

MyInfo

  • Windows only (Windows 7 or newer); the web clipper extension needs Chrome, Firefox, Edge or another Chromium-based browser.
  • Notebooks are stored only on your own computer, and the maker runs no cloud service for them.
  • The $99 purchase includes one year of updates; further updates cost $49 per year, although the last version received keeps working.
  • A business needs a separate license for each device, while an individual may install it on every computer they own.

Key features

CherryTree

Tree of nodes
Notes are nodes that nest to any depth and can be rearranged by drag and drop. Text and images can link to other nodes, anchors, files, folders and web pages.
Rich text and code
Rich text nodes sit alongside code nodes and codeboxes with syntax highlighting, and code can be run through a configurable terminal command.
Images, tables, files and math
Inserts images that can be resized and rotated, simple tables with CSV import and export, embedded files and rendered LaTeX equations.
Single-file or multi-file storage
A document is one XML or SQLite file, or a set of files and directories. Single-file documents can be password protected using 7-Zip.
Import and export
Imports HTML, plain text and files from apps such as KeepNote, Zim, Tomboy, NoteCase and KeyNote, and exports to HTML, plain text and PDF.
Find and replace across the tree
Searches or replaces within one node, a node and its subnodes, or every node, and can build a table of contents from headings.

MyInfo

Notebooks, sections and trees
Notes are arranged hierarchically in a tree or in a sortable list, can be ordered by hand, and notebooks split into color-coded sections.
Tags, attributes and perspectives
Notes take tags, attribute values and metadata that appear as columns in the note list, with perspectives and conditional formatting on top.
Rich text editor
Notes hold pictures, tables, lists, checklists and text styles, with Markdown-style shortcuts and spell checking in more than 40 languages.
Web clipper and attachments
A browser extension sends web snippets, articles and PDFs to MyInfo, and notes can carry several attachments and local copies of files and web pages.
Filter and global search
Quick Filter narrows the note list, and Global Search uses boolean syntax across all notebooks, including text inside attached PDFs and Office files.
Export, publishing and encryption
Exports to HTML, OPML, Microsoft Word and plain files and folders, publishes a notebook as a website, and password-protects notebooks with encryption.
