Value for money
BFree at home. For work, the Commercial License is $49 once per user, with lifetime access and no recurring fees. Fair enough for a tool that does screenshots and recordings as well, though it's more than most pay-once utilities ask.
AFree on Windows under the GNU GPL, for private and commercial use. The Mac app is $1.99 once on the Mac App Store, priced to cover the team's costs. Hard to argue with either number.
Free plan and trial
AThe Personal License is free for personal productivity, schoolwork and hobby or side projects, with no registration or credit card. The split is by what you use it for, so commercial or income-generating work calls for the paid license.
AThe full Windows app costs nothing, at home or at work, and there's no trial clock. Only the Mac version is paid.
Features
AIt saves text, rich text, HTML, images and files, with pinned clips, folders and a searchable Paste Menu on Ctrl + Alt + V. Editors, one-click converters, text extraction from images and translation are built in, and so are screenshots and screen recording. That's the job and then some.
BRegion, window and full-screen capture, an editor with arrows, text, highlighting and blur, and export to a file, the clipboard, a printer, email, Office or Jira. Solid. But scrolling capture is only documented for Internet Explorer, and the OCR plug-in leans on a part of Office 2003 and 2007.
Ease of use
BNo rating is on record to go by, so a B. There's no sign-up to get through, and one hotkey opens the Paste Menu to search, preview and paste. Syncing across devices is less neat, as it works through a cloud drive you connect.
BNo store rating on record, so a B is as high as we go. Press the Print key, drag, and the capture opens in the editor. Sending shots to Jira takes some configuring first.
Platforms and integrations
DWindows only. The help center lists other platforms only as future plans. It does connect out to Google Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox for sync and backup, and to Google Translate, DeepL, Bitly, Imgur and Pastebin.
BWindows and Mac, with ties to Jira, Microsoft Office and Flickr. But the Mac app is a separate one with fewer features that was last updated in June 2020, and the FAQ says no Linux version is planned.

  • Clipboard history holds up to 1,000 clips, and the site says reaching that depends on the device's memory.
  • Syncing and backup across devices are described as working through a connected cloud drive such as Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox.

  • The full version is for Windows. The Mac app costs $1.99, was last updated in June 2020 and has fewer features, per its App Store listing.
  • There is no Linux version, and the FAQ says none is planned.
  • Capturing a complete scrolling web page is documented only for Internet Explorer.
  • The OCR plug-in depends on Microsoft Office Document Imaging (MODI), an optional component of Office 2003 and 2007.

Key features

ClipClip

Clipboard history
Automatically saves the latest 1,000 clips, covering plain text, rich text, HTML, CSV, images and files. The site notes that the limit depends on the device's memory.
Paste Menu
A hotkey, Ctrl + Alt + V by default, opens a menu to search, preview and paste latest and saved clips into the current app without opening the main window.
Pinned clips and folders
Frequently used clips can be pinned for quick pasting, and clips can be grouped into custom folders, including folders added from the local file system and password-protected ones.
Clip editors
Built-in editors handle plain text, rich text, HTML and images. The image editor can resize, draw, blur and annotate a clip without leaving the app.
Converters and actions
One-click tools change case, strip formatting, encode or decode Base64, URLs and HTML, create MD5 hashes, extract text from images and translate through Google Translate or DeepL.
Screenshots and screen recording
Captures the full screen, a window or a custom area, and records the screen with audio. Captures are saved to the clipboard and the clip manager for editing.

Greenshot

Region, window and fullscreen capture
Captures a selected region, the active window or the whole screen with the Print key and its modifiers, and can capture the last region again.
Image editor
Opens each capture in an editor for drawing rectangles, ellipses, lines, arrows and freehand lines, adding text, cropping and enlarging the image.
Highlight and obfuscate
Highlights text or an area, turns the surroundings to grayscale or magnifies a selection, and hides sensitive details by pixelizing or blurring them.
Export destinations
Saves to a file, copies to the clipboard, prints, attaches the image to an email, sends it to Office programs or uploads it to photo sites.
Jira upload
Can be configured to upload screenshots to a Jira Server or Jira Cloud instance, and lists recently viewed tickets in the destination picker.
Mac version
A separate Mac app captures a region, window or the full screen, annotates and obscures parts of the image, and exports to a file, the clipboard or email.
