Value for money
BThe paid version only comes inside Google Workspace, from $7 a user a month on a 1-year commitment. That's about typical, and Gmail, Drive and Meet come with it. But Starter adds nothing to the calendar itself. More booking pages and payments wait for Standard at $14.
APro is €9.95 once, for a lifetime license with free upgrades, and one license covers one person on several computers. That's less than two months of a typical calendar subscription. It's sold in euros, with no US dollar price shown.
Free plan and trial
AFree with a personal Google Account on web, Android and iPhone, with one appointment booking page thrown in. Most people will never pay. Extra booking pages, payments and automatic email reminders are the paid bits.
BRainlendar Lite is free for good: events, tasks, alarms, skins, printing and iCalendar import and export. But sync with Google Calendar, Outlook.com, CalDAV and the rest is Pro only, and that's a wall most people with an online calendar will hit.
Features
AShared, colour-coded calendars you can view together, a booking page, Google Meet links and files on events, and Google Tasks next to them. Workspace plans add Gemini scheduling from Gmail and Time Insights, though Time Insights only shows on a computer.
BEvents and tasks with alarms you can snooze, a Quick Add line that understands repeats, skins, Lua scripts and daily backups. Solid for a desktop calendar. But it doesn't merge calendars from different sources, and Outlook support is Windows only.
Ease of use
B4.5 from about 132,000 App Store ratings. If you have a Google Account there's nothing to set up. On Workspace plans, an event spotted in an email can be added with one click.
BInstall it and your calendar is on the desktop, with your data in a plain local .ics file. Skins and scripts are there if you want to tinker, not a requirement. There's no rating on record to go by, so a B at best.
Platforms and integrations
AWeb, Android and iPhone, tied into Gmail, Google Meet, Google Tasks and Stripe for paid bookings. No desktop app is listed, so on a computer it lives in a browser tab.
BWindows, Mac and Linux, with the same data, skins and scripts on all three. No phone or web version though: the site suggests syncing Pro and your phone with Google Calendar instead.

Key features

Google Calendar

Appointment booking pages
Publish a page where others pick a time on your calendar. Eligible paid plans allow several schedules, Stripe payments, email verification and up to 20 co-hosts.
Shared and layered calendars
Create calendars shared with a team or a whole organization, and view several calendars together, color-coded by category.
Scheduling from Gmail with Gemini
On Workspace plans, Gemini in Gmail can suggest meeting times and add events detected in an email with one click.
Google Meet and attachments
Events can carry a Google Meet video link and attached files, so the call and its documents open from the invitation.
Time Insights and working location
Work and school accounts can see how much time goes to meetings and who they meet most, and can share working hours and location.
Tasks on the calendar
Items from Google Tasks appear on the calendar next to events.

Rainlendar

Events and tasks on the desktop
Events and tasks are kept in separate lists that sit on the desktop, and both can also be shown in the calendar window. Several windows can be shown at once, such as the current and the upcoming month.
Alarms with snooze
An alarm can fire ahead of an event or task and be snoozed for later. A single event or task can carry more than one alarm.
Skins and Lua scripting
Skins change how the windows look and can be mixed together, categories change how individual events appear, and Lua scripts can alter how a skin behaves or fetch content from the internet.
Standard iCalendar storage
Events and tasks are saved in the iCalendar format (RFC 2445), by default in a local .ics file, and can be exported or imported as .ics. Settings and events are backed up automatically every day.
Sync with online calendars (Pro)
Pro connects to Google Calendar and Tasks, Office 365 / Outlook.com, CalDAV servers, network shared calendars, Remember The Milk and Toodledo, and to Microsoft Outlook on Windows.
Quick Add and printing
A Quick Add widget creates an event or task from one line of text, including a recurrence pattern and a category. Events and tasks can be printed as a list or a calendar layout, or written to a PDF.
