Who each one suits
IFTTT
- Personal and smart-home automations with one trigger and one action
- People who prefer switching on ready-made automations to building them
- A low-cost paid plan priced per account rather than per run
Tasker
- Android users who want detailed control over how their phone behaves
- Automations tied to location, time, the app in use or device state
- People who prefer a one-time purchase to a subscription
Worth knowing
IFTTT
- The Free plan allows only 2 Applets, and Pro stops at 20.
- Multi-action Applets and Webhooks need Pro; queries, filter code and AI services need Pro+.
- Free Applets run at standard speeds; the fastest speeds are reserved for paid plans.
- IFTTT's terms say it offers no refunds or credits, and subscriptions renew automatically.
Tasker
- Tasker is an application for Android only; the developer's site lists no iOS, desktop or web version.
- A few actions, such as Kill App and Mobile Data on some devices, require root access.
- The 7-day trial is a direct download from the developer's site; the Google Play version is paid from the start.
- Triggering tasks from another Android device or a PC needs the separate Join app.
Key features
IFTTT
- Applets
- An Applet links a trigger in one service to an action in another. Published Applets can be switched on as they are, or you can build your own.
- 1,000+ services
- IFTTT lists more than 1,000 services, from apps such as Google Sheets, Slack and Notion to smart-home brands such as Philips Hue, Ring and LIFX.
- Multi-action Applets and Webhooks
- Pro and Pro+ Applets can run several actions from one trigger and can use Webhooks to reach services IFTTT does not list. Neither is part of the Free plan.
- Queries and filter code
- Pro+ adds queries and filter code to Applets and lets you connect more than one account for the same service.
- Chat Create and MCP
- Chat Create builds an automation from a written prompt, and the IFTTT MCP server connects AI tools to your services and automations. AI services inside Applets need Pro+.
- Mobile apps
- The iOS and Android apps create and manage Applets and add device triggers such as location, photos and notifications. Mobile access is included on the Free plan.
Tasker
- Profiles, contexts and tasks
- A profile links one or more contexts, such as an app, a time, a date, a location, an event or a gesture, to a task, and the task's actions run when the contexts apply.
- 350+ actions
- Actions send SMS, create notifications, change system settings and volumes, control Do Not Disturb, open apps, work with files and control music playback.
- 130+ states and events
- Automations can react to the app in use, the time of day, your location, the Wi-Fi network, a received SMS or call, the song that is playing and other states and events.
- Manual triggers
- Tasks can be started from launcher shortcuts, quick setting tiles, home screen widgets, a long press on the volume buttons, media buttons and notifications.
- Scenes and App Factory
- Scenes let you design your own interface to show information or trigger tasks. The separate Tasker App Factory turns a project into a standalone app.
- Plugins, web APIs and sharing
- Third-party apps expose actions and events to Tasker as plugins, HTTP Request and HTTP Auth actions call web APIs, and TaskerNet shares tasks, profiles and projects as links.
