Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What these tools do, how many we grade and what to know before choosing

14

resume builders we grade, from their own pages

Write a resume and cover letter from a template, with suggestions that match the job you want.

Before you choose, here are 7 things to know about resume builders, worked out from every one we grade.

  1. 1

    We grade 14 resume builders

13 of them are free or have a free plan, and 1 more let you try before paying. Everything in this guide comes from their own pages and our grades.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $16 a month in the middle

From $5.95 (LiveCareer) to $56.33 (Teal), going by what each one's paid plans start at.

  3. 3

Best value: Kickresume, Zety and LiveCareer

Nothing on our chart scores higher than these without costing more.

  4. 4

3 of 14 have iPhone and Android apps

14 run in a web browser and 0 have a Windows app. Check the one you need before you fall for anything.

  5. 5

    The middle GPA is 2.2

1 score 3.0 or higher. The highest is Kickresume, at 3.2.

  6. 6

    Best free option: Kickresume

Kickresume has the highest GPA of the free ones, 3.2. Resume, cover letter and personal website builder with an AI writer.

  7. 7

3 worth keeping, 0 you could make

By our keep-or-make rules, 3 do something you couldn't reasonably build yourself, 0 are simple enough to make with an AI app builder, and 11 are a close call.

Part 02 · Top three

Our top three

The three we'd look at first, and who each one suits

The three resume builders we'd look at first. First place suits the most people; second and third are the best picks for the people it leaves out. Each has an Insider's Guide of its own.

  1. 1st

    3.2GPA

    Kickresume

    Free plan · from $8/mo

For: Most people writing a resume

Kickresume's free plan keeps unlimited resumes and downloads on 4 basic templates and 2 fonts, with 20,000 pre-written phrases. Premium adds 40+ templates with matching cover letters, an AI Writer that drafts a resume from a job title and ad, and an ATS checker, at $8 a month paid as $96 for the year. It runs on the web, iPhone and Android, and its iPhone app averages 4.7 from about 4,200 ratings. Know the limits: the AI Writer and ATS checker are not free, monthly billing is $24, every plan renews on its own with one 14-day refund window for new users, and the iOS app does not run on iPad.

    Huntr

    Free plan · from $26.66/mo

For: Job seekers tracking many applications

Huntr is a job tracker with a resume builder attached. Its free plan keeps unlimited base resumes with PDF export, every template, 2 job-tailored resumes, 100 tracked jobs and unlimited autofill from its Chrome extension, and it runs on the web, iPhone and Android. Its App Store app averages 4.7 from 362 ratings. It is second because Pro costs more than Kickresume's Premium, at $40 a month or $160 for six months, there is no trial of Pro, the free AI credits are only a few, and the extension names no browser but Chrome.

  3. 3rd

    2.8GPA

    Rezi

    Free plan · from $29/mo

For: Anyone who would rather pay once than subscribe

Rezi scores a resume on 23 checks, works a pasted job ad's keywords into it, and writes bullets and cover letters and runs mock interviews with AI. Lifetime is $149 once for Pro's features without the monthly expert review. It runs on the web, with a Chrome extension that fills in applications and a phone app for job matches. It is third because the free plan stops at one resume and three PDF downloads, Pro is $29 a month with no yearly option, Word and Google Drive export need a paid plan, and it has no App Store rating on record.

Part 03 · Pricing

Part 05 · Keep or make

Keep or make?

Which are worth paying for, and which you could make yourself

0

Simple enough to make yourself, of 14

Some software does something you couldn’t reasonably build yourself. Some is simple enough that an AI app builder could make the core of it in an afternoon. Here’s where resume builders land, by the same rules for every tool.

  • 3

    Keep it

It does something you could not reasonably make for yourself, or it costs nothing.

  • 11

    Your call

You could make the core of it, and you would give something up.

  • 0

    You could make this

What it does is the kind of thing an AI app builder makes well, and it charges every month.
