Who each one suits

Antidote

  • People who write in both English and French
  • Editors and translators who want explanations with each correction
  • Families: one subscription covers five users
  • Organizations that need a corrector installed without external servers

LanguageTool

  • People who write in several languages, not only English
  • LibreOffice, Thunderbird and Apple Pages users who want a checker add-on
  • Developers who need a proofreading API or a checker they can host themselves

Worth knowing

Antidote

  • Druide's store lists prices in Canadian dollars, plus taxes where applicable.
  • The subscription is billed once a year with no monthly option, and store purchases are not refundable.
  • English and French are separate: one language is included, and having both costs CA$89.95 instead of CA$59.95.
  • There is no native Android app. Android, Chromebook and Linux users work in Antidote Web, and Antidote Mobile has no corrector of its own.

LanguageTool

  • The free Basic plan checks 2,000 characters per text field and allows 3 AI rephrasings a day.
  • There is no free trial of Premium; LanguageTool offers a 14-day money-back guarantee instead.
  • Monthly billing is $24.90, more than four times the per-month cost of the annual plan.
  • Apps are listed for Windows, macOS and iOS; no Android app appears on the site.

Key features

Antidote

Corrector
Flags spelling, grammar and typography errors with a tooltip explaining each one, and its filters pick out repetition and non-inclusive wording.
Reformulation
A subscription-only mode that uses generative AI trained by Druide's linguists to rewrite, retouch, soften or shorten a passage or a segment of it.
Dictionaries
Definitions link on to synonyms, antonyms, word combinations, conjugations and word families, with audio pronunciation for subscribers.
Language guides
578 articles cover grammar, style, spelling and punctuation, and the corrector's tooltips link to the article that explains the rule in question.
Anti-Oops! for email
Steps in when Send is clicked to prompt a final check of the email, confirm that the intended attachments are included, and flag wording that may be badly received.
Connectors to other software
The free Connectix utility links Antidote 12 or Antidote Web to more than 90 applications, so corrections are applied in the original document.

LanguageTool

Grammar, spelling and style checks
Checks grammar, punctuation, spelling, casing and style. Premium adds more than 20,000 extra checks for English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Polish and Portuguese.
AI paraphrasing
Rephrases a sentence to be more formal, more fluid or shorter. Basic accounts get 3 rephrasings a day and Premium removes the limit.
Long-text checking
Premium checks up to 150,000 characters per text field, against 2,000 on the Basic plan.
Style guide and dictionaries
Custom rules enforce consistent wording. Teams share a style guide and a dictionary of approved terms, with admins deciding who can add to them.
Add-ons and apps
Browser add-ons for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Opera, plugins for Google Docs, Word, Apple Pages and LibreOffice, email add-ons, and apps for Windows, macOS and iOS.
Open-source core and API
The core checker is open source, with code on GitHub, and users can set up their own LanguageTool server. A hosted Proofreading API accepts up to 60,000 characters per request.
