Who each one suits

Beaver Habit Tracker

  • People who want a plain streak tracker with no goals or scores
  • Self-hosters running Docker, Unraid or Easypanel
  • Ticking habits from an API, Home Assistant or a Stream Deck

OpenHabitTracker

  • People who want notes, tasks and habits in one free app
  • Habits on loose intervals, where an overdue figure beats a streak
  • Self-hosters who want sync on their own Docker server
  • Using the same tracker on Windows, Linux, macOS and phones

Worth knowing

Beaver Habit Tracker

  • There are no store apps: it runs in a browser, with a standalone web-app mode on iOS, and a native iOS client is only in TestFlight beta.
  • On the hosted service, unlimited habits, categories and daily backup need the Pro license, and the Basic plan's habit cap is not published.
  • It has no goals by design: habits are ticked off per day, and the feature list includes no numeric targets or counts.
  • Self-hosting means running the Docker image yourself; the pricing section lists daily backup only under hosted Pro.

OpenHabitTracker

  • Syncing devices needs a Docker server that you host yourself. The vendor's own web app saves data on the device and has no online sync.
  • The Docker image is described as a server app for one user.
  • On Linux and in the web app, notifications arrive only while the app is open.
  • It is a personal project by a single developer, with feedback handled on Reddit and GitHub.

Key features

Beaver Habit Tracker

Streaks without goals
Habits are ticked off day by day in a grid and shown as streaks. The app deliberately leaves out goals and targets.
Daily notes and periodic habits
A note or description can be added to a day's entry, and a habit can follow a period such as every second weekend instead of every day.
Habit management
Habits can be reordered, edited, duplicated or archived from a context menu and grouped by category. Light and dark themes and custom CSS are supported.
REST API
An API creates, updates, lists and completes habits. The README links community projects built on it for Stream Deck, Home Assistant, Apple Shortcuts and CalDAV.
Self-hosting
The BSD-3-Clause licensed server runs from a Docker image, with templates for Unraid and Easypanel, and stores data in SQLite or a JSON file.
Import and export
Data exports and imports in the app's own JSON format, and CSV files from other trackers such as Loop Habit Tracker can be imported.

OpenHabitTracker

Overdue ratio instead of streaks
The time since a habit was last done is compared with its repeat interval: a 10-day habit that is 2 days overdue reads 120%. Classic streaks can be switched on.
Flexible habit rules
A habit sets how many times and how often per day, week, month or year, and is measured in repetitions, time spent or a quantity. Each has a timer, checklist and calendar.
Notes and tasks alongside habits
Markdown notes are rendered in the list, and tasks carry a planned date and time, a duration, a checklist and a timer. Categories and priorities apply to all three.
Search, filter and sort
Lists can be narrowed by text, date, category, priority and status, habits can be filtered by how overdue they are, and there are eleven sort keys.
Statistics and charts
Weekly statistics sit beside each list, and every habit has charts for progress toward its target, history by day to year, its ten longest streaks and weekday frequency.
Self-hosted sync and file formats
Devices sync through a Docker image run on your own server. Data imports and exports as JSON, YAML, TSV and Markdown, and Google Keep notes can be imported.
