How we grade them
| 3.2GPABusyCalVery good | 3.4GPACalenGooVery good | |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A$49.99 once for the Mac app on up to 5 of your Macs, with 18 months of updates, and it keeps working after that. That's under a year of a typical calendar subscription. Or it's $39.99 a year on the Mac App Store. The iPhone app is $9.99 extra. | A$5.99 once on Android and $6.99 once on iPhone, with no subscription. A typical calendar app charges about that every month. The desktop app is the dear one at $49.99 on the Microsoft Store, and each version is bought separately. |
| Free plan and trial | BThe Mac App Store version has a Free Edition for essential calendaring, but the listing doesn't spell out which premium features it leaves out. You also get a 14-day trial of the full Mac app. | CThere's no free version. Android has a 72-hour trial sent by emailed link, and the desktop download can be tried before you buy. No iPhone trial is listed, so there it's pay first. |
| Features | ADay, week, month, year and list views you can reshape, typed entry like "Lunch with Joe next Tuesday at 12:30", tasks that carry forward until done, Calendar Sets, Smart Filters, travel time with leave-now alerts and a menu bar calendar. | ADay, week, month, agenda and year views, Google Tasks on their due dates, event templates, floating events that roll forward until done, and up to five reminders an event. The desktop app adds contacts and an email client. That's deep. |
| Ease of use | BWe have no App Store rating on record, so a B is the most we'll give. Typing events in plain words helps a lot. Everything else being adjustable means there's plenty to set before it feels like yours. | B4.6 from about 300 App Store ratings, which rounds up from 4.57. With nearly every part of the display adjustable, there's a lot of settings to get through before it looks the way you want. |
| Platforms and integrations | CMac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, and nothing else. It does sync with iCloud, Google, Microsoft 365, Exchange and Fastmail, and pulls tasks from Apple Reminders, Todoist and Microsoft To Do. | AiPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Android, Windows, Mac and Linux, syncing with Google, iCloud, Exchange and CalDAV servers such as Nextcloud. There's no web version, and Linux support depends on your distribution. |
| Best for | Mac users who like to fiddle with every view | tinkerers who want to pay once |

Worth knowing
BusyCal
- Mac and iOS only. The iPhone and iPad app is a separate $9.99 purchase and is not covered by the Mac license or subscription.
- A direct license includes 18 months of updates. The app keeps working after that, but newer versions need a paid renewal.
- The Mac App Store version is sold by subscription only ($4.99 a month or $39.99 a year); the one-time license is sold on BusyMac's own store.
- The App Store listing does not detail the Free Edition's limits, and BusyMac's licensing FAQ still says the App Store apps need an active subscription.
CalenGoo
- The iOS, Android and desktop versions are different apps and each is bought separately.
- There is no free version. Android has a 72-hour trial and the desktop download can be tried first, but no iOS trial is listed.
- The desktop app costs $49.99 on the Microsoft Store; the site gives no price for the in-app purchase in its own downloads, and says Linux support depends on the distribution.
- Online booking is a separate product: the Booking System is free up to 20 booking hours a month and about $10 a month after that.
