Best for tinkerers who want to pay once

CalenGoo is the calendar for people who open the settings first. Nearly every view, colour and reminder can be changed, it syncs straight with Google Calendar and Google Tasks, and you pay once: $5.99 on Android, $6.99 on iPhone. The snag is there's no free version, and the phone, tablet and desktop apps are separate purchases.

Who CalenGoo is for

  • Great if you use Google Calendar and want more views and settings than Google's own apps give you
  • Handy when you're done with subscriptions and would rather pay once per device
  • A treat if you want calendar, tasks, contacts and email in one desktop window

Who CalenGoo is not for

  • Skip it if you want to try it on an iPhone first, as no iPhone trial is listed
  • Pricey if you want it everywhere, since Android, iPhone and the $49.99 desktop app are bought one by one
  • Not for you if you like an app that works out of the box with nothing to set up

Why CalenGoo gets a 3.4

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • AValue for money$5.99 once on Android and $6.99 once on iPhone, with no subscription. A typical calendar app charges about that every month. The desktop app is the dear one at $49.99 on the Microsoft Store, and each version is bought separately.
  • CFree plan and trialThere's no free version. Android has a 72-hour trial sent by emailed link, and the desktop download can be tried before you buy. No iPhone trial is listed, so there it's pay first.
  • AFeaturesDay, week, month, agenda and year views, Google Tasks on their due dates, event templates, floating events that roll forward until done, and up to five reminders an event. The desktop app adds contacts and an email client. That's deep.
  • BEase of use4.6 from about 300 App Store ratings, which rounds up from 4.57. With nearly every part of the display adjustable, there's a lot of settings to get through before it looks the way you want.
  • APlatforms and integrationsiPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Android, Windows, Mac and Linux, syncing with Google, iCloud, Exchange and CalDAV servers such as Nextcloud. There's no web version, and Linux support depends on your distribution.
