Who each one suits

Flameshot

  • People who want the same free screenshot tool on Windows, macOS and Linux
  • Marking up a capture with arrows, text and pixelation before saving it
  • Scripting screenshots or binding them to custom keys from the terminal

Shottr

  • Designers and front-end developers who measure pixels and colors on screen
  • Capturing long pages or chats as one scrolling screenshot
  • Buyers who prefer a one-time license to a subscription

Worth knowing

Flameshot

  • GNOME Wayland and Plasma Wayland support is described as experimental, and GNOME 41 or later asks to share the screen on every capture.
  • It relies on a system tray; GNOME users need an AppIndicator extension to see the icon.
  • The upload tool sends images to Imgur anonymously, and the shared client ID can run into Imgur's hourly quota.
  • Downloads are 64-bit only, and on macOS it must be granted screen recording permission before it can capture anything.

Shottr

  • Mac only, and the vendor calls a Windows or Linux version unlikely. Its pages disagree on the minimum macOS: 10.15 on the homepage, 12 in the knowledge base.
  • The free version asks you to consider buying after 30 days, and commercial use requires a paid license.
  • Shottr Cloud uploads are public to anyone with the URL and carry no storage guarantee. Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud and FTP are not supported.
  • The interface is not localized; the vendor says it is intentionally avoiding other languages for now.

Key features

Flameshot

Area capture with in-place editing
Launch it, drag a selection box over the area you want and annotate directly on screen before saving the shot, without opening a separate editor.
Annotation tools
Arrows, lines, pencil, marker highlights, text, rectangles, circles, solid color boxes and an incrementing counter, plus a blur tool that turns into pixelation at larger sizes.
Customizable interface
A configuration dialog sets the interface color, which tool buttons appear, the keyboard shortcuts and how images are saved.
Command-line interface
Terminal commands capture a region or the full screen without opening the GUI first, with options for a delay, a save path and copying to the clipboard.
Upload to Imgur
Uploads a selection to Imgur after a warning and lets you delete it afterwards. Since version 11.0.0 you can set your own Imgur Client ID for a separate upload quota.
Tray icon and history
Runs in the background with a system tray icon for configuration, and keeps a screenshot history that a shortcut opens.

Shottr

Scrolling screenshots
Captures a long web page or chat conversation as one image, in any app or window. A manual scrolling mode covers systems where automatic capture does not work.
Annotations and backdrops
Adds text, arrows, freehand drawings, highlights, spotlights and a magnifier callout, and the Backdrop tool sets a screenshot on a gradient with shadows and rounded corners.
Text recognition and QR codes
A hotkey lets you select an area of the screen; Shottr recognizes the text in it and copies it to the clipboard. The same feature reads QR codes.
Screen ruler and color picker
Arrow keys measure horizontal and vertical distances on a screenshot, and the Tab key copies the color under the cursor. A contrast checker supports WCAG 2.0 and APCA.
Pixelate, erase and pin
Hides parts of an image behind pixelation or removes them, and pins screenshots as floating, always-on-top borderless windows for reference.
Upload and link sharing
Uploads a screenshot to Shottr Cloud or any S3-compatible storage and copies its public URL. Shottr Cloud needs a free access token tied to your email.
