How we grade them

Value for money
AKeep is free with a personal Google Account. The paid route is Google Workspace, from $7 a user a month on a 1-year commitment, and that buys a whole office suite with Keep as one small part of it.
BThe Combo unlocks almost every extra in one go, $34.99 on the US App Store, and it's a one-time buy. Fair. But sync is sold apart: iCloud sync is $14.99 on iPhone and WeNote Cloud is $5 a month on Android. The stores don't show how the other items are billed.
Free plan and trial
ANotes, lists, labels, reminders, sharing and offline use are all free on the web, Android and iOS. The one thing held back is making lists with Gemini, which needs a Google AI plan or a Pixel device.
BNotes, to-do lists, reminders, the calendar, note lock and local backup are free, with ads but none full-screen. But undo and redo, search inside a note, home widgets and more themes are paid, and which extras cost money differs between Android and iOS.
Features
BA note can be text, a checklist, a photo, a drawing or audio, and voice memos get transcribed. Reminders fire at a time or a place, and shared lists update live. But it's built for short notes. You organise with colours, pins and up to 50 labels, and that's the lot.
BNotes and checklists with labels and colours, repeating reminders, a calendar with holidays for 250 countries, and pictures, drawings and voice in a note. Notes can be locked too. But the calendar doesn't sync with Google Calendar.
Ease of use
B4.59 from about 29,000 App Store ratings, a whisker under our line for an A. There's very little to learn: open it, type the thing, pick a colour if you like.
A4.83 from about 1,000 App Store ratings. There's no login, so you open it and write. Labels sit across the top as tabs you swipe between.
Platforms and integrations
AWeb, Android, Wear OS, iPhone, iPad and a Chrome extension, with a side panel that drops your notes into Google Docs and Slides. No desktop app is listed, so on a computer it's a browser tab.
CAndroid and iPhone only. The FAQ says there's no Windows version, and no web app is offered. Android syncs to Google Drive or WeNote Cloud and iPhone to iCloud, and the two don't sync with each other.

Worth knowing

Google Keep

  • Creating lists with Gemini in Keep requires a Google AI plan or a Pixel device.

Key features

Google Keep

Notes, lists, photos, drawings and audio
A note can be text, a checklist, a photo, a drawing or an audio recording. Voice memos are transcribed automatically, and text inside images is picked up by search.
Labels, colors and pins
Notes are organized with up to 50 labels, color codes and pins. Search filters by color and by attributes such as lists, audio notes with reminders or shared notes.
Time and location reminders
A reminder brings a note back at a set time or on arrival at a place, such as a grocery list that appears at the store.
Shared notes
Several people can edit the same note or list at once, with checked-off items showing up in real time. Notes can also be shared with a Google family group.
Keep inside Google Docs and Slides
A side panel in Docs and Slides lists Keep notes, which can be dragged into the document. Highlighted text or images can be saved back to Keep.
Chrome extension and offline use
The Chrome extension saves URLs, text and images to Keep and lets you add labels. Notes can be updated offline, and changes sync once you reconnect.

WeNote

Notes, to-do lists and shopping lists
A note holds free text of any length or a checklist. Checklist items are reordered by dragging, struck through with a tap, and moved to the bottom once done.
Labels and colors
Notes are organized with labels shown as tabs that you swipe between, and with note colors. Unlimited custom colors are a paid extra.
Reminders and calendar
Reminders can be one-time or repeat daily, weekly, monthly or yearly, and notes can be placed on a calendar that can also show public holidays for 250 countries.
Pictures, drawings and voice
Pictures, drawings, handwriting and voice recordings can be attached to a note, alongside the text.
Note lock
Individual notes and to-do lists, or the whole app, can be locked with a PIN, pattern or password, with fingerprint unlock where the device supports it.
Sync and backup
On Android, notes sync to WeNote Cloud or to a hidden Google Drive app folder. On iOS they sync through iCloud, sold as an in-app purchase. Local backups export as a zip file.
