Value for money
CPremium is $5 a month billed annually, about what this category typically charges. But on a plain notepad that mostly buys 500 MB of storage, no ads, 10 old versions per note and 100 AI requests. Standard at $12.50 and Plus at $20 are the same again with more AI.
BThe Combo unlocks almost every extra in one go, $34.99 on the US App Store, and it's a one-time buy. Fair. But sync is sold apart: iCloud sync is $14.99 on iPhone and WeNote Cloud is $5 a month on Android. The stores don't show how the other items are billed.
Free plan and trial
BFree covers sync between your phone and the web, offline notes and 30 MB of storage, which is a lot of plain text. But you get ads, and unlimited syncs and note history are listed for paid plans only.
BNotes, to-do lists, reminders, the calendar, note lock and local backup are free, with ads but none full-screen. But undo and redo, search inside a note, home widgets and more themes are paid, and which extras cost money differs between Android and iOS.
Features
BPlain notes that can turn into a to-do list or a shopping list, saved as you type, with tags and search as you type. There's a GPT-based chat assistant and a trash that keeps deleted notes for 30 days. It's a simple notepad by design, and note history and the PIN lock are paid.
BNotes and checklists with labels and colours, repeating reminders, a calendar with holidays for 250 countries, and pictures, drawings and voice in a note. Notes can be locked too. But the calendar doesn't sync with Google Calendar.
Ease of use
A4.6 from about 8,600 App Store ratings. It's styled after a paper notepad and saves as you write, so there's very little to learn. Sign-in is through a Google or Apple account only.
A4.83 from about 1,000 App Store ratings. There's no login, so you open it and write. Labels sit across the top as tabs you swipe between.
Platforms and integrations
BAndroid, iPhone and a web version for your computer, all on one account. That's good coverage. But there's no desktop app and no integrations or API on the listing.
CAndroid and iPhone only. The FAQ says there's no Windows version, and no web app is offered. Android syncs to Google Drive or WeNote Cloud and iPhone to iCloud, and the two don't sync with each other.

Worth knowing

Inkpad Notepad

  • The free plan shows ads and stops at 30 MB of storage; hiding ads needs a paid plan.
  • The website quotes prices billed annually. The US App Store also lists monthly options and a Basic plan ($1.99 monthly, $19.99 yearly) that the website's table omits.
  • Sign-in works only through a Google or Apple account.
  • AI use is capped by plan, from 100 standard requests on Premium to 600 on Plus, and the advanced model is on Plus only.

WeNote

  • Android and iPhone only: the FAQ says there is no Windows version, and no web app is offered.
  • Android and iOS do not sync with each other. iOS supports iCloud sync only, and moving from Android is a one-time transfer through an emailed backup file.
  • The calendar is separate from Google Calendar and does not sync with it.
  • WeNote Cloud is a $5 a month subscription that the one-time Combo purchase does not include.

Key features

Inkpad Notepad

Notes, to-do lists and shopping lists
A note can stay as plain text or be switched to a to-do list or a shopping list. Everything is saved automatically as you write.
Sync and web access
Notes sync between Android and iOS devices and back up online, and the same account opens them in a web browser on a computer. Notes on the phone stay available offline.
Search and tags
Keyword search filters the list of notes as you type, and tags group related notes together.
AI chat assistant and writing tools
A chat assistant built on GPT helps with editing and brainstorming, writing tools fix spelling, grammar and style, and a quiz mode asks questions about your notes.
Note history and PIN code
Paid plans can view and restore up to 10 earlier versions of a note and protect the app with a PIN code.
Export, import and trash
Notes export to an Inkpad Archive zip file that can be imported into another account. Deleted notes sit in the trash for 30 days before they are removed.

WeNote

Notes, to-do lists and shopping lists
A note holds free text of any length or a checklist. Checklist items are reordered by dragging, struck through with a tap, and moved to the bottom once done.
Labels and colors
Notes are organized with labels shown as tabs that you swipe between, and with note colors. Unlimited custom colors are a paid extra.
Reminders and calendar
Reminders can be one-time or repeat daily, weekly, monthly or yearly, and notes can be placed on a calendar that can also show public holidays for 250 countries.
Pictures, drawings and voice
Pictures, drawings, handwriting and voice recordings can be attached to a note, alongside the text.
Note lock
Individual notes and to-do lists, or the whole app, can be locked with a PIN, pattern or password, with fingerprint unlock where the device supports it.
Sync and backup
On Android, notes sync to WeNote Cloud or to a hidden Google Drive app folder. On iOS they sync through iCloud, sold as an in-app purchase. Local backups export as a zip file.
