Worth knowing
Lex
- Free accounts get 30 Ask Lex messages a day, 5 saved-prompt runs a month and a small daily AI budget; premium models need Lex Pro.
- Lex Pro's AI use is metered: the plan includes $30 of AI credits a month, and heavier use can be covered by overage credits sold at cost.
- Lex runs in a desktop or mobile browser. An iOS app is offered to Pro subscribers as early access, and no desktop app is listed.
- Track changes is marked as coming soon on the homepage.
Wordtune
- Wordtune writes in English only; other languages are supported only as input to translate into English.
- Basic stops at 10 rewrites a day and 3 summaries a month, and Advanced is still capped at 30 a day and 15 a month. Only Unlimited removes the caps.
- The site lists a web editor, Chrome and Edge extensions and an iPhone app. No Mac, Windows or Android app is listed.
- Wordtune does not offer refunds, and the 3-day trial needs payment details up front.
Key features
Lex
- Ask Lex
- A chat panel for feedback, rewrites and brainstorming on the open document. Highlighting text, or tagging @Lex in a comment, asks about one passage. The AI model can be switched.
- Checks
- Runs line edits for brevity, grammar, readability and more, shown as highlights in the document. Clicking one shows the suggested edit and the reason for it.
- Custom prompts and context
- Saved prompts can be reused in Ask Lex and Checks and shared with others. Style guides and knowledge bases give the AI a voice to follow and background to draw on.
- Versions and Rewind
- Versions are named save points for trying another approach. Rewind is a timeline at the top of a document for scrubbing through past changes and restoring an earlier state.
- Live collaboration and comments
- A shared link gives edit or view-only access, with co-editing in real time and comment threads. Lex Teams is a paid add-on for unlimited group use of shared folders.
- Export and API
- Documents export to Word, PDF, Markdown, HTML and LaTeX, and an API can create, list and update documents with a key generated in settings.
Wordtune
- Rewrite
- Offers a list of alternative phrasings for selected text to choose from. Free accounts get 10 rewrites a day; the vendor's FAQ says paid accounts can also rewrite whole paragraphs at a time.
- Tone and length controls
- Switches text between casual and formal, or shortens and expands it. The FAQ lists tone and length changes among the features that need a paid account.
- Spelling and grammar checks
- Flags spelling and grammar errors and suggests corrections. These checks are unlimited on every plan, including the free Basic plan.
- Summarizer
- Summarizes articles, documents, web pages and YouTube videos, with section summaries, a library of saved items and notes. 3 summaries a month on Basic, 15 on Advanced.
- AI writing suggestions
- Generates text that continues a draft, explains a point or adds a conclusion, and links any fact it cites to its source. The FAQ says the Spices suggestions are limited to Google Docs and the web editor.
- Translate into English
- Text written in Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, Hindi, Korean, Hebrew, Russian, German, French or Portuguese can be turned into English rewrite suggestions.
