Who each one suits

Maccy

  • Mac users who want clipboard history and nothing else
  • Keyboard-driven work: search and paste without reaching for the mouse
  • People who prefer open-source apps that keep data on the device

Pastebot

  • Mac users who paste the same snippets often and want them organized
  • People who clean up or reformat text before pasting it
  • Keyboard-driven work, such as pasting recent copies by number key
  • Buyers who want to choose between a one-time license and a subscription

Worth knowing

Maccy

  • macOS only; it requires macOS Sonoma 14 or higher.
  • The free download is on GitHub or Homebrew. The website's buttons lead to paid copies: $4.99 or more on Gumroad, $9.99 on the Mac App Store.
  • History stays on the Mac, so the pages read describe no syncing of clips to other devices.
  • It is built to do one job; the vendor says it leaves out the extra features other clipboard managers add.

Pastebot

  • macOS only. Pastebot 3 requires macOS 26 Tahoe or later, and the App Store listing says macOS 26.2.
  • There is no free version, only a 14-day trial.
  • The $39 direct license includes one year of updates. Each further year costs $19, though the last version paid for keeps working.
  • A Pastebot 2 license does not unlock Pastebot 3; it only gives a $12.99 discount on the direct purchase.

Key features

Maccy

Clipboard history popup
Shift-Command-C, or a click on the menu bar icon, opens the history. An item is selected with Enter, a click, or Command and its number.
Type-to-search
Start typing to filter the whole clipboard history and press Enter to select a result, without using the mouse.
Paste options
Option-Enter selects and pastes an item in one step, and Option-Shift-Enter pastes it without formatting. Automatic pasting needs the macOS Accessibility permission.
Pinned items
Option-P pins or unpins an item, and unpinned items can be cleared separately from pinned ones.
Privacy handling
If a password manager removes a copied password from the clipboard, Maccy removes it too. All history is stored on the Mac and does not leave it.
Shortcuts actions and preferences
The App Store listing says complex cases can be automated with Shortcuts actions and that every aspect of the app is configurable in preferences.

Pastebot

Clipboard history
Keeps a running history of everything copied, searchable by typing, with metadata, your own notes and a resizable preview. Blacklisted apps are never recorded.
Custom and Smart Pastebins
Custom Pastebins store often-used clippings permanently, each with a color and an icon or emoji. Smart Pastebins gather clippings that match rules.
Quick Paste Menu
Shift-Command-V opens the menu in any app. A number key pastes one of the last 10 copies, and shortcuts jump to a chosen pastebin.
Filters
Custom filters change a clipping before it is pasted. Base filters can be stacked into more complex ones, previewed live and given keyboard shortcuts.
Stacks
Several clippings can be collected into a stack and then pasted one after another in sequence with Control-Command-V or another hotkey.
iCloud Sync and Universal Clipboard
iCloud Sync keeps clippings, pastebins and filters the same across Macs, and items copied on an iPhone arrive through Universal Clipboard.
