How we grade them

Value for money
AFree from GitHub or Homebrew under the MIT licence. If you'd rather pay, the website copy is $4.99 or more on Gumroad and the Mac App Store one is $9.99. Both are the same app, sold to support development.
BThe free app is the bargain. Pro is $96 a year, or $10 a month, and it's mostly AI plus sync. You can't buy sync without the AI, and the top AI models need the $20 tier.
Free plan and trial
AThe complete app is free if you get it from the GitHub releases page or Homebrew. Just don't be thrown by the website's download buttons, which lead to the paid copies.
ALauncher, clipboard history, snippets, window management and the whole extension store, all free, even at work. What's held back is AI, sync and notes past the first 5.
Features
BIt does one job, clipboard history, and does it properly: type-to-search, pinned items, paste without formatting, and it drops a password when your password manager clears it. But it's small on purpose. No syncing of clips to other devices is described, and the extras other clipboard managers add are left out.
AA launcher, clipboard manager, text expander and window manager in one. Add thousands of extensions for Linear, Slack, Notion, Spotify and the rest, or build your own.
Ease of use
BNo store rating on record, so a B is as high as we go. Shift-Command-C opens the history, you type to filter and press Enter. Pasting automatically needs the macOS Accessibility permission.
BPress a hotkey, type, hit Enter. That bit takes a minute. The rest is hotkeys, aliases and extensions you set up yourself, and some users say version 2 came with bugs.
Platforms and integrations
DMac only, on macOS Sonoma 14 or higher. It has Shortcuts actions for automating things, and that's the only tie-in listed. Your history stays on the one Mac.
BMac, Windows, iPhone and iPad, plus a browser extension. No Android or Linux, and Raycast says the Windows app doesn't have every Mac feature yet. The extension API is a real plus.

  • People who prefer open-source apps that keep data on the device

Worth knowing

Maccy

  • macOS only; it requires macOS Sonoma 14 or higher.
  • The free download is on GitHub or Homebrew. The website's buttons lead to paid copies: $4.99 or more on Gumroad, $9.99 on the Mac App Store.
  • History stays on the Mac, so the pages read describe no syncing of clips to other devices.
  • It is built to do one job; the vendor says it leaves out the extra features other clipboard managers add.

Raycast

  • AI is not part of the free plan; Raycast AI, cloud sync and unlimited notes need Pro.
  • The free plan keeps 3 months of clipboard history and allows 5 Raycast Notes.
  • Top-tier AI models need the Plus or Max tier, at $20 or $50 a month.
  • The Windows app does not yet have every macOS feature; Raycast says it is still bringing them across.

Key features

Maccy

Clipboard history popup
Shift-Command-C, or a click on the menu bar icon, opens the history. An item is selected with Enter, a click, or Command and its number.
Type-to-search
Start typing to filter the whole clipboard history and press Enter to select a result, without using the mouse.
Paste options
Option-Enter selects and pastes an item in one step, and Option-Shift-Enter pastes it without formatting. Automatic pasting needs the macOS Accessibility permission.
Pinned items
Option-P pins or unpins an item, and unpinned items can be cleared separately from pinned ones.
Privacy handling
If a password manager removes a copied password from the clipboard, Maccy removes it too. All history is stored on the Mac and does not leave it.
Shortcuts actions and preferences
The App Store listing says complex cases can be automated with Shortcuts actions and that every aspect of the app is configurable in preferences.

Raycast

Launcher with hotkeys and aliases
Open apps, search files and run commands from one keyboard-driven window, and assign hotkeys or aliases to the commands and apps you use most.
Extension store
Thousands of extensions for tools such as Linear, Slack, Notion and Spotify. The extension API lets anyone with web development skills build their own.
Clipboard history, snippets, quicklinks
Built-in utilities included in the free plan. Free keeps clipboard history for 3 months.
Window management
Window management commands are part of the free core features; creating custom window management commands needs Pro.
Raycast AI
Pro adds Quick AI and AI Chat on a monthly credit allowance. A browser extension for Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Chromium browsers passes the active tab to the AI.
Notes and iOS companion app
Raycast Notes captures quick thoughts: 5 notes on Free and unlimited on Pro. The iOS app carries AI, notes, snippets and quicklinks; syncing them across devices needs Pro.
