Value for money
BPro is $8 a month or $85 a year, about the $9 that's typical here. All it does is lift the weekly limits on snooze, send later, follow-up reminders, read receipts and link tracking, and raise the caps on translation and grammar check. Fair if you lean on those. No one-time or lifetime license is offered.
BThe app is free, and the two add-ons are optional: Unlimited Accounts is a one-time purchase and Wino Intelligence a monthly subscription. But neither price is published. The site says current regional pricing appears before payment, so we can't tell you whether they're good value.
Free plan and trial
AThe free version is a complete email client: unlimited accounts, a unified inbox, search, mail rules, signatures and templates. A free Mailspring ID adds weekly tasters of the Pro features, such as 15 snoozes and 5 send-later messages. Most people could stay here.
AAlways free, with no Wino Account needed: Mail, Calendar, Contacts and To Do, all core customization options and up to 3 email accounts. Most people could stay on that for good. A fourth account is where the paid add-on comes in.
Features
BA unified inbox, Gmail-style search across every account, read receipts and link tracking, send later, snooze, reminders when nobody replies, translation and a grammar check. Solid. But Exchange and POP3 are not supported, and the calendar is a read-only preview for Google accounts.
AMail for Outlook, Gmail, iCloud and other IMAP accounts, with filters, aliases and HTML templates. A calendar with day, week and month views, contacts with CardDAV sync, and a to-do mode with due dates and reminders. Mail can be read, written and searched offline. That's the whole job, with AI as an optional add-on.
Ease of use
BNo rating on record, so a B is our ceiling. It's a desktop app you install and add accounts to, with Gmail, iCloud, Office 365, Fastmail, Outlook.com and Yahoo all supported.
BNo rating on record, so a B is our ceiling. It's a Windows app you install and add accounts to, and it needs no account of its own. Swipe actions, hover actions and keyboard shortcuts can all be changed to suit you.
Platforms and integrations
BMac, Windows and Linux, so every desktop is covered. There's no iOS, Android or web version, and the docs say the team is focused on the desktop app. Mail syncs over IMAP straight from your provider to your machine.
DWindows only. The site lists no macOS, Linux, mobile or web version. Inside Windows it connects Outlook, Gmail, iCloud and other IMAP accounts, plus Outlook and Google calendars and CalDAV ones such as iCloud and Yahoo.

  • Linux users who want a modern desktop email client
  • People who want a free client with unlimited accounts
  • Anyone who wants read receipts and link tracking built into email

Wino Mail

  • People with up to three Outlook, Gmail or IMAP accounts who want a free client
  • Those who prefer open source software that keeps mail on their own PC

Worth knowing

Mailspring

  • There is no iOS, Android or web version; the docs say the team is focused on the desktop app.
  • Exchange (EWS and ActiveSync) and POP3 are not supported. Microsoft 365 accounts connect over IMAP and SMTP.
  • The calendar is a read-only preview for Google accounts; a full calendar is described as coming later.
  • No one-time or lifetime license is offered, and Pro does not include premium support.

Wino Mail

  • It runs on Windows only; the site lists no macOS, Linux, mobile or web version.
  • The free app is limited to 3 email accounts. Removing the limit needs the Unlimited Accounts add-on, unless you build the app from source.
  • Prices for Unlimited Accounts and Wino Intelligence are not published: the site says current regional pricing appears before payment.
  • Wino Intelligence needs a Wino Account, processes the mailboxes you enable in the cloud and has monthly usage allowances.

Key features

Mailspring

Unified inbox
One inbox for Gmail, iCloud, Office 365, Fastmail, Outlook.com, Yahoo and other IMAP accounts. The free version puts no limit on the number of accounts.
Advanced search
Mailspring indexes mail so that Gmail-style search queries can look through message contents across every connected account.
Read receipts and link tracking
Notifies you when a recipient opens a message or clicks a link. A free Mailspring ID can track 5 messages a week of each kind, and Pro is unlimited.
Send later, snooze and reminders
Schedule a message, snooze a conversation, or get a reminder when nobody replies. The free allowance is 5 send-later messages, 5 reminders and 15 snoozes a week.
Translation and grammar check
Translates drafts and incoming messages and checks grammar in the composer with LanguageTool. Both have weekly caps, which are higher on Pro.
Open source with direct sync
The full codebase is published under the MIT license. Mail syncs over IMAP straight from the provider to your machine, not through Mailspring's servers.

Wino Mail

Mail for Outlook, Gmail and IMAP
Connects Outlook, Gmail, iCloud and other IMAP/SMTP accounts, with linked accounts for a single view, mail filters, aliases, HTML templates, pinned mails and mail categories.
Calendar
Day, week, work-week and month views for Outlook and Google calendars through their own APIs, CalDAV for accounts such as iCloud and Yahoo, and local-only calendars kept on the device.
Contacts and To Do modes
Separate app modes manage contacts, with CardDAV sync, address books and favorites, and tasks, with lists, due dates, reminders and smart views such as My Day and Planned.
Offline use and local storage
Mail stays on your device by default and can be read, written and searched offline. Storage can be managed per account, and data can be backed up with password protection.
Customization
Themes with a theme editor, customizable swipe and hover actions, and keyboard shortcuts that can be set separately for each app mode.
Wino Intelligence add-on
An optional subscription that labels incoming mail, builds a Daily Briefing and offers translation, summaries and rewrites. It can be enabled for up to 10 mailboxes.
