Value for money
BPro is $8.33 a month billed yearly, so $99.99, or $9.99 month to month. That's bang on typical. It buys managed cloud models, hosted text clean-up and settings sync, so mostly you're paying to skip the API keys.
AIt's free and open source under the MIT License, with no subscription, no cloud service and no telemetry. The maintainer says he doesn't even accept donations. Can't get cheaper than that.
Free plan and trial
AThe on-device Whisper and Parakeet models are free with no word caps, no time limit and no account. Plugging in your own provider keys costs nothing from Spokenly either. You could stay free for good.
AThe full tool is free, with every engine and meeting mode included. There's no paid tier, so nothing is held back and there's no limit to run into.
Features
AHold a shortcut and it types at the cursor in 100+ languages. Modes with AI Instructions fix grammar and drop filler to suit the app. On a Mac it also records meetings with no bot, and gives coding agents a voice through an MCP server.
BNine local speech engines, spoken punctuation, replacement tables and a meeting mode with speaker attribution that exports to Markdown, SRT or VTT. Good going. But grammar clean-up and meeting summaries aren't built in: you pipe text to a tool like Ollama yourself.
Ease of use
BWe have no App Store rating on record for it, so a B is as high as we go. The local route needs no account at all. Cloud without Pro means sorting out your own API keys first.
CNo rating is on record, and setup happens in the terminal. It runs as a daemon, and on Linux you bind the hotkey in your compositor or add yourself to the input group. Engines are switched with a line of config.
Platforms and integrations
AMac, Windows, Linux and iPhone, where it works through a custom keyboard. It hooks into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenAI, Deepgram, Groq and Ollama. There's no Android app, only a waitlist.
BLinux and macOS, with keybindings for Hyprland, Niri, Sway, River, GNOME and KDE, and hooks into Ollama, LM Studio, Soniox and Waybar. No Windows or mobile version. Prebuilt packages want a recent distribution, such as Ubuntu 24.04.

Who each one suits

Spokenly

  • People who want unlimited free dictation that runs offline
  • Users who already pay for speech or LLM API keys
  • Developers who talk to coding agents on a Mac

Voxtype

  • Linux users on Wayland desktops such as Hyprland, Sway or GNOME
  • People comfortable setting up a tool from the terminal
  • Dictating prompts into terminals, editors and coding agents

Worth knowing

Spokenly

  • Without Pro, cloud models need your own provider API keys, and the provider bills you for usage.
  • Meeting recording, Agentic Actions and the MCP server are Mac features; the MCP server ships only in the macOS sideload build.
  • There is no Android app; the site offers a waitlist.
  • The Team price needs at least 2 seats.

Voxtype

  • There is no Windows or mobile version; packages cover Linux and macOS only.
  • Setup happens in the terminal: it runs as a daemon, and on Linux the hotkey is bound in the compositor or needs the user added to the input group.
  • Prebuilt Linux packages need a recent distribution, such as Ubuntu 24.04, Debian Trixie or Fedora 40 or later.
  • Grammar cleanup and meeting summaries are not built in; they rely on a separate tool such as Ollama that you install yourself.

Key features

Spokenly

Dictation in any app
Hold a shortcut, speak and release, and the text is typed wherever the cursor is, in 100+ languages with automatic detection. On iPhone it works through a custom keyboard.
Free local models
Whisper and Parakeet models run on the device at no cost and with no usage limits. Local Only Mode blocks network requests so audio stays on the machine.
Cloud models, your keys or Pro
Use cloud engines by connecting your own keys from providers such as OpenAI, Deepgram and Groq, or subscribe to Pro for managed models like GPT-4o Transcribe, Deepgram Nova 3 and Soniox.
AI Instructions and modes
Modes with AI Instructions fix grammar, remove filler words and format text for the app in use. Pro hosts this processing; otherwise it runs on your own LLM key or Apple Intelligence.
Meeting recording on Mac
Records the microphone and system audio without a bot joining the call, saves the recording to History, and transcribes it afterward with a local or cloud model.
Voice input for coding agents
The macOS sideload build includes an MCP server so Claude Code, Codex and Cursor can ask for spoken answers, plus Agentic Actions for voice-controlled Mac automation.

Voxtype

Push-to-talk at the cursor
Hold a hotkey, ScrollLock by default, speak and release, and the text is typed at the cursor, with the clipboard as a fallback. A toggle mode starts and stops with one press each.
Nine local speech engines
Whisper, Parakeet, Moonshine, SenseVoice, Paraformer, Dolphin, Omnilingual, Cohere Transcribe and OpenVINO Whisper are switched with one config line. Models load on first use and unload when idle.
GPU and NPU acceleration
Whisper runs on Vulkan across GPU vendors, the ONNX engines use CUDA 12 or 13 on NVIDIA and MIGraphX on AMD cards, and OpenVINO runs Whisper on Intel NPUs.
Meeting mode
Continuous transcription with automatic chunking and speaker attribution for meetings and interviews, stored locally and exported to Markdown, plain text, JSON, SRT or VTT.
Text processing
Spoken punctuation turns words such as "comma" into symbols, replacement tables fix common mistranscriptions, and an optional command pipes the transcript through a local LLM or a shell script.
Linux desktop integration
Compositor keybindings cover Hyprland, Niri, Sway, River, GNOME and KDE, with an evdev fallback for X11. It pauses MPRIS media players while recording and shows a floating waveform.
