Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.4

GPA, above 7 of the 35 other journaling apps we grade

1 Second Everyday, or 1SE, is a video diary app for iPhone and Android. You save a short clip or photo for each day on a calendar, and the app stitches weeks, months or years of them into a single movie. The free version covers one Journal project with a one-second snippet per day. A Pro subscription adds longer and unlimited snippets, more project types, music, cloud backup and higher-resolution export, and it can also be bought once as Life of Pro.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about 1 Second Everyday, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Pick a clip or a photo for the day and you're done, the app does the stitching, and daily reminders stop the calendar filling up with holes.

  6. 6

The report card

Best for a video diary made one second at a time

1 Second Everyday saves a one-second clip of each day and stitches them into a movie of your month, your year or your kid's first few years. But it's phones only and nothing syncs between devices. Free stops at one project and one second a day, and backup is a Pro feature at $49.99 a year, with no monthly plan.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCPro is $49.99 a year, which works out at $4.17 a month, bang on the middle for a journaling app. There's no monthly plan. Life of Pro at $249 once is five years of the yearly price, so it only pays off if you really keep this up.
Free plan and trialCFree gives you one Journal project and one 1-second snippet a day, and you'll hit both. No cloud backup either, and nothing syncs between devices, so a lost phone is a lost diary. Ads stay until you pay.
FeaturesCIt does the video diary fully, with calendar projects, Freestyle projects for trips, Collab for up to six people, Smart-Fill and a music editor in Pro. But that's a smaller job than journaling: writing is one private note on a day, and filters are iOS only.
Ease of useA4.8 from about 48,200 App Store ratings. Pick a clip or a photo for the day and you're done, the app does the stitching, and daily reminders stop the calendar filling up with holes.
Platforms and integrationsCPhones only: iPhone and Android, with no desktop or web version, and on iPad it runs as the iPhone app at iPad size. Content doesn't sync between devices, and Google Photos is the only connection on record.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.4

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who 1 Second Everyday is for

  • Fits if you want a diary you can keep up in a few seconds a day
  • Works for parents recording a child's first years as one video

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want to write, as each day gets a clip and a private note
  • Not for you if you use two devices, since content doesn't sync between them
  • Tight if you're staying free, with one project, one second a day, ads and no cloud backup
  • Not for you if you want a desktop or web version, as it's phones only and runs at iPhone size on iPad
  • Watch out: there's no monthly plan, Life of Pro is $249 once, and a backup is deleted 12 months after Pro ends

Good to know

Good for

  • People who want a visual diary they can keep up in a few seconds a day
  • Parents recording a child's first years as a single video
  • Year-in-review or trip recap videos without manual editing

Worth knowing

  • Mobile only: there is no desktop or web version, and on iPad it runs as the iPhone app at iPad size.
  • Content does not sync between devices. Moving a project means restoring a 1SE backup, which needs Pro and replaces what is on the device.
  • Free accounts get one Journal project and one 1-second snippet a day, with no cloud backup.
  • The help center says there is no monthly plan: Pro is $49.99 a year or a one-time $249.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace 1 Second Everyday you would be making a video editor. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 21 of the 35 other journaling apps grade higher. It costs $49.99 a year.

What you could make

  • Daily notes: an app builder makes this well.

What you could not

  • A video editor.
  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.

What this rests on. 1 Second Everyday’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
