Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 6 of the 27 other AI research tools we grade
Anara is an AI research assistant that works from your own library of papers and files. You upload documents or search academic databases, ask questions across one file, a folder or the whole library, and get answers that link to the exact passage they came from. A note editor suggests citations as you write, and Anara runs on the web, Mac, iPhone and iPad, with a Chrome extension for saving pages.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Anara, taken from its own pages and our grades.
- 1
Best for answers you can check against the page
Anara answers from your own library of papers and links every claim to the exact passage it came from.
- 2
Paid plans start at $8 a month for each person
As its pricing page puts it: $8 per seat / month, billed yearly ($10 billed monthly).
- 3
There is a free plan
a daily allowance of AI usage and uploads, files of up to 20 MB or 120 pages each, and the Zotero and Mendeley connectors. No credit card required.
- 4
It runs on 3 platforms
Web, macOS and iOS, with a browser extension too.
- 5
Chat across your library
Ask questions of a single file, hundreds of files in a folder or the entire library. Anara says one conversation can work across up to 10,000 files.
- 6
Answers cited to the passage
Every answer carries inline citations that open the exact passage in the source document, in numbered form or an academic citation style.
- 7
Agent and paper search
The agent searches your library, the web and academic databases such as PubMed, arXiv and JSTOR, then returns a cited synthesis. It can also import files and reorganize folders on request.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 6 of 27
That is against the other AI research tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Anara you would be making a library of papers and sources to search. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for answers you can check against the page
Anara answers from your own library of papers and links every claim to the exact passage it came from. The usage limits come without numbers, free uploads stop at 20 MB or 120 pages, and model choice, OCR and the Drive and Notion connectors need Pro at $16 a seat. Deep Search and Model Council sit on Max at $80, there's no Android or Windows app and no student discount, and its pricing page shows two different sets of prices.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Plus is $8 a seat a month billed yearly, $10 monthly, which is the low end here. But model choice, OCR and the Drive and Notion connectors start at Pro, $16 yearly or $20 monthly, the dear end, and Deep Search waits for Max at $80. Ordinary money, in other words. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No card needed, and Zotero and Mendeley connect even here. The caps are the problem: AI usage refreshes daily with no number attached, and each upload stops at 20 MB or 120 pages, so a whole book won't go in. You'll meet those limits. |
| Features | B | It covers the job: one chat can span 10,000 files, every answer opens the exact passage behind it, the agent searches PubMed, arXiv and JSTOR, and the editor suggests citations as you write. The unusual bits, Deep Search and Model Council, are Max only, so no A. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record, and this isn't open-and-go: Anara does nothing until you've built a library, by uploading files or connecting Zotero, Mendeley or Drive. The plans don't help — usage is quoted as 4x Plus or 5x Pro, never as a number you could plan around. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web with a real set of integrations: Mac, iPhone and iPad apps, a Chrome extension, a Word add-in, and connectors for Zotero, Mendeley, Drive, Notion, Dropbox and Slack. The desktop app is Mac only and there's no Android, which keeps it off an A. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Anara is for
- Fits if you have hundreds of papers saved and want answers you can check against the page
- Works for people whose library lives in Zotero or Mendeley, which connect on every plan
Who it is not for
- Tight if you stay free: AI usage refreshes daily with no number given, and uploads stop at 20 MB or 120 pages
- Pricey if you want Deep Search or Model Council, which start at $80 a seat a month on Max
- Watch out: model choice, OCR and the Drive, Notion and OneDrive connectors need Pro at $16 a seat yearly or $20 monthly
- Skip it if you're on Android or want a Windows desktop app, as the listing shows neither, and there's no student discount
- Watch out: the pricing page shows two sets of prices, and its HTML still lists Plus at $10 and Pro at $20 billed yearly
Good to know
Good for
- Researchers who want answers grounded in their own library of papers
- Working across hundreds of files and checking each claim against its source
- Zotero and Mendeley users, whose libraries import on every plan
- Writing with citations in a note editor or in Microsoft Word
Worth knowing
- The Free plan's AI usage limit refreshes daily, and each upload is capped at 20 MB or 120 pages.
- Choosing a model, OCR and the Google Drive, Notion and OneDrive connectors need Pro; Deep Search and Model Council need Max.
- The pricing page's scripts show the prices recorded here to visitors without a paid plan, while its initial HTML lists an earlier, higher set (Plus $10, Pro $20, billed yearly).
- The desktop app is for Mac only and there is no Android app. Anara's FAQ says it does not currently offer a student discount.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Anara you would be making a library of papers and sources to search. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 13 of the 27 other AI research tools grade higher. It costs $96 a year.
What you could make
- Web clipper: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- A library of papers and sources to search.
- A search engine with an AI model behind it.
- An AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make.
- An AI agent, with the models and the safeguards behind it.
- Citation records for millions of papers.
- Apps for macOS and iOS that stay in step with each other.
- It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
- It plugs into other products, Zotero, Mendeley and Google Drive among them.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Anara’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
