Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 13 of the 48 other AI meeting note takers we grade
Anarlog is an open-source meeting notepad for macOS, Windows and Linux. It records system audio and the microphone on your own computer, so nothing joins the call, and keeps notes, transcripts and recordings on the device by default. Transcription and summaries can run on local models, on your own API keys or on Anarlog's hosted AI. It was previously called Hyprnote and then Char.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Anarlog, taken from its own pages and our grades.
No rating on record, and the free route asks you to bring the AI, through Ollama, LM Studio or your own API keys, before the summaries work.
- 1
Best for meeting notes that stay on your own computer
There's no web version or phone app yet, and Free's speaker labels are manual.
- 2
Paid plans start at $11.67 a month when paid by the year for each person
As its pricing page puts it: $14 per person / month, or $140 per person / year.
- 3
There is a free plan
Unlimited on-device transcription using local models or your own API keys, local recordings, notes, templates, chat and exports, plus a local API, CLI and MCP.
- 4
It runs on 3 platforms
macOS, Windows and Linux.
- 5
Bot-free capture
Records system audio and the microphone directly, so nothing appears in the participant list and no calendar access is needed. It works with Zoom, Google Meet, Teams and in-person talks.
- 6
Local-first storage
Notes and transcripts live in a SQLite database on your device and recordings are local files. You can use it without an account and export to Markdown.
- 7
Your choice of AI
Run local models through Ollama or LM Studio, bring your own keys for providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Deepgram, or use hosted AI on Pro. Local models work offline.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 13 of 48
That is against the other AI meeting note takers we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Anarlog you would be making a bot that joins your calls and turns the talk into notes. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for meeting notes that stay on your own computer
Anarlog is an open-source meeting notepad for Mac, Windows and Linux that records on your own computer with no bot in the call and keeps notes and recordings in local files. Free runs the AI on local models or your own paid API keys, while hosted AI, sync, sharing and integrations need Pro at $14 a month. There's no web version or phone app yet, and Free's speaker labels are manual.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Pro is $14 a person a month, or $140 for the year, against a category that typically starts near $10. Ordinary money for what it buys: hosted transcription and AI, system-wide dictation, encrypted sync across 3 devices, sharing and automations. |
| Free plan and trial | B | Free covers unlimited on-device transcription, local recordings, notes, templates, chat, exports and a local API, CLI and MCP server, so one person can genuinely live on it. You supply the AI, though: local models through Ollama or LM Studio, or your own paid API keys. |
| Features | B | It covers the job: records system audio and the microphone with nothing joining the call, merges what you typed with the transcript into an editable summary, chats across your meetings, and on Pro posts to Slack, Notion and Linear. Speaker labelling is manual until you pay. |
| Ease of use | C | No rating on record, and the free route asks you to bring the AI, through Ollama, LM Studio or your own API keys, before the summaries work. There's no account, calendar access or bot to set up. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | A desktop program and nothing else: Mac, Windows and Linux, with no web version and no phone app yet, though the download page says those land in October. It does hook into Slack, Notion, Linear, HubSpot, Attio and Pipedrive, with a CLI and an MCP server. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Anarlog is for
- Fits if your meeting notes have to stay on your own device
- Works for developers who want open-source code, a CLI and an MCP server
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want notes from your phone today, as the mobile apps aren't out yet and there's no web version
- Not for you if local models and API keys sound like a chore, as hosted AI needs Pro at $14 a month or $140 a year
- Tight if you're staying free and want speakers named for you, since Free's speaker labeling is manual
- Watch out: shared notes and the Cloud API keep a server-readable copy, unlike end-to-end encrypted Cloud Sync
- Watch out: integrations, sync, sharing and automations are Pro only, and SSO and SCIM need Enterprise at an unpublished price
Good to know
Good for
- People who need meeting notes kept on their own device
- Organizations that do not allow meeting bots or cloud notetakers
- Developers who want open-source code, a CLI and an MCP server
- Teams that work on Linux as well as macOS and Windows
Worth knowing
- There is no mobile app yet. The download page says the iPhone, iPad and Android apps launch in October.
- Hosted transcription and AI, dictation, sync, sharing and automations need Pro. Free relies on local models or your own paid API keys.
- Shared notes and the Cloud API keep a server-readable copy, unlike Cloud Sync, which is end-to-end encrypted.
- Speaker labeling is manual on the Free plan; better speaker identification is a Pro feature.

Anarlog's GPA of 2.4 is higher than 13 of the 48 other AI meeting note takers we grade, and level with 9.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Anarlog you would be making a bot that joins your calls and turns the talk into notes. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 26 of the 48 other AI meeting note takers grade higher. It costs $140 a year. Anarlog is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.
What you could not
- A bot that joins your calls and turns the talk into notes.
- An AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make.
- Speech turned into text you can trust.
- Apps for macOS, Windows and Linux that stay in step with each other.
- It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
- It plugs into other products, Slack, Notion and Linear among them.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Anarlog’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
