Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.6

GPA, above 50 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade

Anytype is a local-first workspace for notes, tasks and structured data. Everything is an object with a type and properties, stored on your device and encrypted before it syncs to other devices or shared spaces. The app is free to use; paid memberships add remote storage and unlimited shared channels. The desktop client is published under a source-available license, and the team has announced a move to the MIT license.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Anytype, taken from its own pages and our grades.

No store rating on record, and this one asks something of you.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for an encrypted workspace that lives on your device

Anytype is a local-first workspace that keeps notes, tasks and lists on your device, encrypts them before they sync and works with no internet, free with unlimited private spaces.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $4 a month

As its pricing page puts it: $4 per month, billed yearly ($5 billed monthly).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

The app is free with unlimited private spaces. The free tier includes 100 MB of remote storage, which only files such as images and videos count toward, and a limited number of shared channels.

  4. 4

    It runs on 5 platforms

macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android.

  5. 5

    Objects, types and properties

Every item is an object with a type, such as Note, Task, Person or Book, and properties like due date or priority that describe objects and link them together.

  6. 6

    Calendar, gallery and kanban views

Groups of objects can be laid out as a calendar, a gallery or a kanban board, then filtered and grouped by their properties.

  7. 7

    Local-first encrypted sync

Content is stored on your device and encrypted before it syncs, so the app keeps working without a connection. Sync can also run peer-to-peer over a local network.

  8. 8

    A 2.6 GPA, above 50 of 147

That is against the other note-taking apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card

Best for an encrypted workspace that lives on your device

Anytype is a local-first workspace that keeps notes, tasks and lists on your device, encrypts them before they sync and works with no internet, free with unlimited private spaces. In September 2026 the team announced a rebuilt successor, Anytwo, and said work on this app will slow. There's no web version, free remote storage is 100 MB, and members of a shared space see everything in it.

ToolGPA report cardAnytypeGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCPlus is $4 a month billed yearly, $5 month by month. That's past the lowest-priced quarter of this category, which ends at $2.99, and what it buys is modest: 1 GB of remote storage and unlimited shared channels. Pro at $8 gets you 10 GB.
Free plan and trialBThe app is free with unlimited private spaces, and only files like images and videos count against the 100 MB of remote storage, so a text note-taker could live here for years. Paste in screenshots, though, and 100 MB goes quickly.
FeaturesBEvery item is an object with a type, like Note, Task or Book, shown as a calendar, gallery or kanban board. Encrypted sync, offline use, shared channels with chat, publishing a page to the web, self-hosted sync. Sharing is all-or-nothing, mind: no per-object permissions.
Ease of useCNo store rating on record, and this one asks something of you. Thinking in objects, types and properties is a real learning curve next to an app that just hands you a page to write on.
Platforms and integrationsBMac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android, with a Raycast extension, a Local API, an MCP server and a CLI tool. What holds it back is the browser: there's no web version at all, so it's apps only.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.6

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Anytype is for

  • Fits if you want encrypted notes that keep working offline or on a bad connection
  • Works for people who want to host the sync themselves, or keep everything on one device

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want an app with years of active work ahead, as the team says development is slowing for Anytwo
  • Not for you if you need your notes in a browser, because there's no web version
  • Tight if you store lots of photos or video, since free remote storage is 100 MB and 1 GB costs $4 a month
  • Watch out: everyone in a shared space sees everything in it, with no per-object permissions
  • Too light for a group on free, which allows up to 10 shared channels, and the business plan is €20 per editor a month

Good to know

Good for

  • People who want encrypted notes that keep working without an internet connection
  • Users who want the option to self-host sync or keep data on one device
  • Small groups sharing a private, encrypted workspace with built-in chat

Worth knowing

  • There is no browser version; Anytype runs only as desktop and mobile apps.
  • The free tier includes 100 MB of remote storage; more requires a paid membership.
  • Everyone in a shared space can see everything in it; per-object permissions are not supported.
  • In September 2026 the team announced a rebuilt successor, Anytwo, and said development of the current app will slow down.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of Anytype you could make: notes and kanban boards. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

It costs $48 a year.

What you could make

  • Notes and kanban boards: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • Several people working in it at the same moment.
  • End-to-end encryption done properly.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Anytype’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
