Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.4

GPA, above 6 of the 27 other AI research tools we grade

AskYourPDF is an AI tool for asking questions about documents. You upload a PDF, DOCX, EPUB or text file, or paste a URL, and it answers with citations that point back to the source page. Paid plans add Knowledge Bases for chatting across many files, OCR for scans and a wider choice of GPT, Gemini and Claude models. The site now leads with two newer products, a website chatbot trained on your own content and an AI PDF form filler, and there is a developer API.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about AskYourPDF, taken from its own pages and our grades.

What takes working out is the models, since some come with your plan and others spend credits.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for asking questions of long documents

AskYourPDF answers questions about a document you hand it, and each answer points to the page it came from.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $11.99 a month

As its pricing page puts it: $11.99 per month, billed yearly ($14.99 billed monthly).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

1 document a day of up to 100 pages and 15 MB, with 50 questions and 3 conversations a day on the GPT-5 Mini model.

  4. 4

    It runs on 3 platforms

Web, iOS and Android, with a browser extension too.

  5. 5

    Chat with documents

Upload a PDF, DOCX, EPUB or TXT file, or paste a URL, and ask questions in plain language. Each answer cites the page it came from, and the site says it works in more than 100 languages.

  6. 6

    Knowledge Bases

Premium and Pro group documents into a Knowledge Base, so that one question draws a single cited answer from every file in it.

  7. 7

    Choice of AI models

The free plan runs on GPT-5 Mini. Paid plans add GPT-5, GPT-5.2 and Gemini 2.5 Flash, while Claude 4.5 Sonnet, Claude 4.5 Opus and Gemini 2.5 Pro draw on credits.

  8. 8

    A 2.4 GPA, above 6 of 27

That is against the other AI research tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Keep it

To replace AskYourPDF you would be making an AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card

Best for asking questions of long documents

AskYourPDF answers questions about a document you hand it, and each answer points to the page it came from. It won't go and find papers for you, and the free plan stops at 1 document a day of up to 100 pages on GPT-5 Mini. The Claude and Gemini 2.5 Pro models run on credits even on paid plans, the trial is called free on one page and $1 on another, and the terms say all sales are final.

ToolGPA report cardAskYourPDFGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCPremium is $11.99 a month billed yearly, $14.99 monthly, which is this category's middle. You get 50 documents and 1,200 questions a day with Knowledge Bases and OCR, but the Claude models and Gemini 2.5 Pro run on credits and Premium hands you 10.
Free plan and trialCFree for good, with 50 questions a day. The document cap is the limit: 1 a day, up to 100 pages and 15 MB, on GPT-5 Mini only. Caps you'll hit on your first real afternoon. The paid trial runs 3 days, and one page calls it free while another calls it a $1 trial.
FeaturesCIt does chat-with-your-document completely — PDF, DOCX, EPUB, text or a URL, answers citing the page, Knowledge Bases on paid plans for asking across many files at once. But that's the smaller half of research: it reads what you hand it and won't go and find the papers.
Ease of useBNo store rating on record, so the B comes from what the listing shows, and it shows about the simplest thing in this category: upload a file, ask a question. What takes working out is the models, since some come with your plan and others spend credits.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb, iPhone, Android, a Chrome extension, a Zotero hook-up and a developer API. No Mac or Windows app, though, and that's what an A wants. The API is billed apart from the chat plans: free for 100 messages, then $49.99 a month.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.4

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who AskYourPDF is for

  • Fits if you have one long paper or book and want answers with the page cited
  • Works for Zotero users who want summaries and chat inside their library

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you need something to find the papers, as this only reads what you give it
  • Tight if you're staying free, at 1 document a day of up to 100 pages and 15 MB, on GPT-5 Mini only
  • Not for you if you like a way out, since the terms say all sales are final with no refunds
  • Watch out: Claude and Gemini 2.5 Pro spend credits on every paid plan, and Premium includes only 10
  • Watch out: the 3-day trial is called free on one page and $1 on another, and the API is billed apart at $49.99 a month

Good to know

Good for

  • Students and researchers who want cited answers from long papers and books
  • Very long files: Pro accepts documents of up to 6,000 pages
  • Zotero users who want summaries and document chat inside their library
  • Site owners who want a support chatbot trained on their own pages and files

Worth knowing

  • The free plan covers 1 document a day, capped at 100 pages and 15 MB, and uses GPT-5 Mini only.
  • Knowledge Bases, OCR and Chrome extension access appear only in the benefits of the paid plans.
  • Claude 4.5 Sonnet, Claude 4.5 Opus and Gemini 2.5 Pro need credits on every paid plan; Premium includes 10 and Pro 30.
  • The terms say all sales are final, with no refunds or pro-rata credits.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace AskYourPDF you would be making an AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 13 of the 27 other AI research tools grade higher. It costs $143.88 a year.

What you could not

  • An AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make.
  • A library of papers and sources to search.
  • Citation records for millions of papers.
  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It plugs into other products, Zotero, ChatGPT and WordPress among them, and has an API.

What this rests on. AskYourPDF’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
