Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.6
GPA, above 50 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade
AudioPen records spoken thoughts, transcribes them and rewrites the transcript into structured text in a writing style and language you pick, keeping the original transcript alongside. It also works as voice typing inside other apps on Mac, Windows, iPhone, iPad and Android. The vendor describes it as built for individual thought, not meetings: it does not join calls or label speakers.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about AudioPen, taken from its own pages and our grades.
It is for your own thoughts, not meetings: it won't join a call or say who spoke.
- 1
Best for rambling out loud and getting tidy text back
AudioPen turns a spoken ramble into text in a style you pick, keeps the raw transcript beside it, and types by voice into other apps.
- 2
Paid plans start at $11 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $33 for 3 months of Prime, charged once ($11 a month).
- 3
There is a free plan
Recordings up to 3 minutes, each transcribed and rewritten in a chosen style, plus a limited number of voice typing sessions.
- 4
It runs on 5 platforms
Web, macOS, Windows, iOS and Android, with a browser extension too.
- 5
Transcribe, then rewrite
Each recording is transcribed and then rewritten into structured text, and the plain transcript is kept alongside the rewritten note.
- 6
Writing styles and rewrite level
A style library covers formats such as email, memo and bullet points, custom styles are built from a description or a writing sample, and the edit can be set to low, medium or high.
- 7
Voice typing in other apps
A hotkey on Mac and Windows, a keyboard on iPhone and iPad, and a floating bubble on Android place dictated text wherever the cursor is.
- 8
A 2.6 GPA, above 50 of 147
That is against the other note-taking apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace AudioPen you would be making dictation that types into any app on your computer. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for rambling out loud and getting tidy text back
AudioPen turns a spoken ramble into text in a style you pick, keeps the raw transcript beside it, and types by voice into other apps. It is for your own thoughts, not meetings: it won't join a call or say who spoke. Free recordings stop at 3 minutes and Prime ones at 15, and Prime is $33 for 3 months or $99 for a year, sold as fixed passes.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Prime is $33 for 3 months, so $11 a month, or $99 for a year, which the vendor works out to $8.25. The dearer quarter of this category starts at $8.25 and the dearest tenth at $9.99, so that's the top end of it. The passes are charged once and never renew themselves, at least. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Free gets you the real thing and then a wall: recordings stop at 3 minutes, voice typing is a set number of sessions, and uploading an audio file needs Prime. Three minutes is about one idea. |
| Features | C | It does the talk-to-tidy-text job fully: transcribe then rewrite, a style library plus your own, three levels of edit, speaking one language and writing another, voice typing in other apps. That's a narrower job than note-taking, and the listing is clear it won't record a meeting or say who spoke. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record, so we go by the listing, and it's one button: talk, stop, read. Nothing to connect, nothing to build. Picking a style and a rewrite level is the only setup there is. |
| Platforms and integrations | A | Web, Mac, Windows, iPhone, iPad, Android and a browser extension. Notes go onward through Zapier or webhooks, and on Prime an MCP lets ChatGPT or Claude search and read them. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who AudioPen is for
- Fits if you draft by talking and want the transcript tidied for you
- Works for people who speak one language and need the note written in another
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want meetings recorded, as it won't join a call or say who spoke
- Tight if you're staying free, because recordings stop at 3 minutes and voice typing is a set number of sessions
- Pricey if you only want a few months, at $33 for 3 against $99 for the year, and Prime recordings still stop at 15 minutes
- Watch out: audio uploads need Prime and are capped at 100 files every 4 weeks, at 100 MB each
- Watch out: the AI rewrite needs a connection even when transcription runs on the device, and bulk licenses can't be refunded
Good to know
Good for
- Writers and creators who draft by talking
- Capturing ideas on the move from a phone or watch
- People who find typing slow or painful, such as with RSI or dyslexia
Worth knowing
- Free recordings stop at 3 minutes, and free voice typing is limited to a set number of sessions.
- Prime is sold as fixed-term passes charged once ($33, $99 or $159), not as an auto-renewing subscription.
- It is not a meeting recorder: the vendor says it will not join a Zoom call or label who said what.
- Audio uploads need Prime and are capped at 100 files every 4 weeks, with a 100 MB limit per file.

Part 03 · Features
What it does
Its main features, where it runs, what it works with and who makes it
6
Places it runs: Web, macOS, Windows, iOS, Android and Browser extension
Voice notes rewritten into clear text in a chosen style. Here is what it does, as its own site describes it, and what it covers: AI features, transcription, dictation, notes.
That's a narrower job than note-taking, and the listing is clear it won't record a meeting or say who spoke.
- Transcribe, then rewrite
- Each recording is transcribed and then rewritten into structured text, and the plain transcript is kept alongside the rewritten note.
- Writing styles and rewrite level

- Voice typing in other apps
- A hotkey on Mac and Windows, a keyboard on iPhone and iPad, and a floating bubble on Android place dictated text wherever the cursor is.
- Speak one language, write another
- The spoken language and the written language do not have to match, so a note dictated in Spanish can come back in English.
- Offline transcription option
- The iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows apps can transcribe on the device so audio never leaves it. The AI rewrite step still needs a connection.
- Zapier, webhooks and MCP
- Saved notes can be passed on through Zapier or webhooks, and the Prime-only MCP gives ChatGPT or Claude read-only access to search and read notes.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace AudioPen you would be making dictation that types into any app on your computer. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It costs $132 a year.
What you could make
- Notes: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- Dictation that types into any app on your computer.
- Speech turned into text you can trust.
- Apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
