Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.0
GPA, above 5 of the 51 other AI agents we grade
AutoGPT began in 2023 as an open-source autonomous agent project and is now a platform built around Experts: AI specialists that each have a role, instructions, skills and workflows, coordinated by a generalist agent called Otto. Work starts as a chat brief and can be turned into scheduled routines, with a visual workflow builder for defining the steps yourself. The hosted cloud is a paid subscription with a 7-day trial, and the platform can also be self-hosted with your own infrastructure and model keys.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about AutoGPT, taken from its own pages and our grades.
On the cloud you write a brief and Otto picks the Expert, so you don't have to.
- 1
Best for ready-made agent roles you can also host yourself
The team workspace is still listed as coming soon, and the free route means your own server and model keys.
- 2
Paid plans start at $42.50 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $42.50 per month, billed yearly at $510 (Pro); $50 billed monthly.
- 3
There is a free plan
Self-hosting the open-source platform is free; you supply the infrastructure and your own model API keys. The hosted cloud has no free plan, only a 7-day Pro trial.
- 4
It runs on Web
Web.
- 5
Experts and Otto
32 ready-made Experts cover roles such as SEO content, sales, bookkeeping and market research. Otto, a generalist agent, hands a brief to the right Expert, or you can talk to one directly.
- 6
Routines and scheduled workflows
Recurring work can run on a cron schedule or start from a webhook trigger, with results left for you to review and schedules you can adjust or pause.
- 7
Visual workflow builder
A drag-and-drop graph builder composes workflows from blocks, and Otto can generate a workflow from a plain-English description.
- 8
A 2.0 GPA, above 5 of 51
That is against the other AI agents we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace AutoGPT you would be making an AI agent, with the models and the safeguards behind it. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for ready-made agent roles you can also host yourself
AutoGPT began in 2023 as an open-source agent project and is now a platform with 32 ready-made Experts you brief in chat, plus a builder for your own workflows. The hosted cloud has no free plan: a 7-day trial that needs a card, then $50 a month, with workflow runs charged from a credit wallet on top. The team workspace is still listed as coming soon, and the free route means your own server and model keys.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | D | Pro is $50 a month, or $42.50 if you pay $510 up front for the year. Agent tools here mostly start around $23, so that's roughly double, and workflow runs come out of a prepaid credit wallet on top of the subscription. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Hosting it yourself costs nothing, which is the free bit, but you supply the server and your own model keys. The hosted cloud most people would actually use has no free plan at all: a 7-day Pro trial, card required, then $50 a month. |
| Features | C | On the list: 32 ready-made Experts with a generalist called Otto handing out the work, routines on a cron or a webhook, a builder with 200-plus integration blocks and a spending threshold per Expert. The gap the listing shows is sharing it: the team workspace with admin roles is still marked coming soon. |
| Ease of use | C | On the cloud you write a brief and Otto picks the Expert, so you don't have to. You're still connecting accounts, topping up a credit wallet and learning a graph builder. Self-hosting is Docker and your own keys. No rating on record. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | A web app. More than 200 integration blocks cover Gmail, Slack, GitHub, Notion and HubSpot, and there's a public REST API. No phone or desktop app on the listing. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who AutoGPT is for
- Fits if you want ready-made agent roles for research, content or outreach run on a schedule
- Works for developers who'd rather host an open-source agent platform themselves
Who it is not for
- Pricey if you want it hosted: $50 a month, workflow runs billed on top, and Max at $320 a month
- Not for you if you want a trial without handing over a card, as the 7-day Pro trial asks for one
- Skip it if you need a shared team workspace now, because the Team plan is listed as coming soon
- Watch out: the free route is self-hosting, which means your own server, Docker and model API keys
- Skip it if you want a phone or desktop app, as the listing shows only the web app

Part 04 · Standing
Where it stands
Its grades against its category, and whether to keep it or make your own
5/51
Other AI agents it is graded above
AutoGPT's GPA of 2.0 is higher than 5 of the 51 other AI agents we grade, and level with 6.
It stands best on platforms and integrations (B, above 5 of 51) and worst on value for money (D, above 0).
Its paid plans start at $42.50 a month, against a middle price of $21.25 for the category: 38 of the 44 others that charge start lower.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace AutoGPT you would be making an AI agent, with the models and the safeguards behind it. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 40 of the 51 other AI agents grade higher. It costs $510 a year. AutoGPT is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.
What you could not
- An AI agent, with the models and the safeguards behind it.
- Connections to other products, each kept working as those products change.
What this rests on. AutoGPT’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
