Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.6

GPA, above 36 of the 94 other desktop utilities we grade

AutoHotkey is a free, open-source scripting language for automating the Windows desktop. Scripts define hotkeys for the keyboard and mouse, remap keys, expand abbreviations as you type, send keystrokes and launch programs. It is licensed under the GNU GPLv2 and overseen by the AutoHotkey Foundation, a volunteer-run organization set up to keep the software free of charge.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about AutoHotkey, taken from its own pages and our grades.

It's Windows only, games with cheat prevention are likely to block it, and antivirus tools sometimes flag compiled scripts by mistake.

The report card

Best for scripting your own hotkeys on Windows

AutoHotkey is a free, open-source scripting language for Windows: a short script can make a hotkey, remap a key or turn "btw" into "by the way" as you type. Everything is a plain-text script, so nothing happens until you learn its syntax. It's Windows only, games with cheat prevention are likely to block it, and antivirus tools sometimes flag compiled scripts by mistake.

ToolGPA report cardAutoHotkeyGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAIt costs nothing, and it's a plain download anyone can run. The whole program is free and open source under the GNU GPLv2, and the AutoHotkey Foundation says it was created to prevent the software being monetized. Donations are optional.
Free plan and trialAYou get the full scripting language, as an installer or a ZIP, with the English documentation included. There's no paid edition, so nothing is held back.
FeaturesBThis isn't one trick: hotkeys for keyboard and mouse, window-specific ones, key remapping, abbreviations that expand as you type, keystrokes sent to fill forms, and Ahk2Exe to turn a script into a standalone program. Nothing in the listing shows a gap in Windows automation itself.
Ease of useDEverything lives in plain-text script files, so you're learning AutoHotkey's syntax before anything happens. The built-in commands suit beginners, but it's still code, and no rating is on record to argue otherwise. Antivirus tools also raise false alarms, more often on compiled scripts.
Platforms and integrationsDWindows only, so a single operating system. The vendor describes it as a scripting language for Windows and lists no other platform. No integrations are listed either, though a script can run programs and open websites.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.6

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who AutoHotkey is for

  • Fits if you're on Windows and want your own hotkeys and key remaps at no cost
  • Works for people who type the same phrases or fill in the same forms all day and can write short scripts

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you're on a Mac or Linux, as it's Windows only
  • Not for you if you never want to see code, since everything is a plain-text script with its own syntax
  • Tight if you want it for games, because cheat-prevention tools like GameGuard or Hackshield are likely to block it
  • Watch out: antivirus programs sometimes raise false alarms, more often on compiled and compressed scripts

Good to know

Good for

  • Windows users who want custom hotkeys and key remaps at no cost
  • People comfortable writing or adapting short scripts
  • Text expansion and repetitive data entry on Windows

Worth knowing

  • Windows only: the vendor describes it as a scripting language for Windows and lists no other platform.
  • Everything is defined in plain-text script files, so using it means learning AutoHotkey's scripting syntax.
  • Games with cheat-prevention measures such as GameGuard or Hackshield are likely to block AutoHotkey.
  • Antivirus programs sometimes raise false-positive alerts, more often for compiled and compressed scripts.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

AutoHotkey is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

And it is not the kind of software a weekend replaces.

What you could not

  • Keys and buttons remapped below the level of apps.
  • Connections to other products, each kept working as those products change.
  • Text expansion that works in every app.
  • A real app for Windows. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. AutoHotkey’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
