Avira
Free antivirus suite with a VPN, PC cleaner and password manager
Avira report card
Fair · out of 4.0 · graded Oct 17, 2026
Best for a free Windows suite with a VPN taster
Avira Free Security packs a lot into Windows for nothing: real-time antivirus, ad and tracker blocking, a password manager, PC cleanup and 500 MB of VPN a month. Its phone apps are thinner, there's no Mac app on our record, and we have no prices because Avira's site turned our reader away.
Who Avira is for
- Great if you want antivirus, a cleaner and a password manager on Windows for free
- Handy when you need a little VPN data now and then without paying
- Good for Android users who want a free scanner with app locking
Who Avira is not for
- Skip it if you use a Mac, as there's no Mac app on our record
- Tight if you stream over the free VPN, which stops at 500 MB a month
- Not for you if you want web protection on Android for free, as that's a Pro feature
Why Avira gets a 2.4
Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.
- CValue for moneyNo prices on record: avira.com turned our reader away, so there's no two-year figure for a household, and C is the grade for no stated price. What paying mostly buys is an unlimited VPN and automatic updating, through the Pro versions and Avira Prime.
- BFree plan and trialAvira Free Security gives a Windows PC real-time antivirus, web and ad blocking, a password manager, a software updater and a cleaner. One person could live on that. The VPN stops at 500 MB a month, and Android gets 100 MB a day.
- CFeaturesAntivirus, ad and tracker blocking, a driver and software updater, more than 30 cleanup tools and a password manager on Windows. The phones have gaps the listing names: the iPhone app mentions no virus scans, and Android web protection is Pro.
- CEase of use4.26 from about 4,700 App Store ratings, middling for this category.
- BPlatforms and integrationsWindows, Android and iPhone, and the password manager syncs between them. There's no Mac app on our record and no API, so it stops at B.
What these grades rest on. Graded from this listing, whose facts were read from Avira's Microsoft Store, App Store and Google Play listings on 17 October 2026, and its App Store rating. avira.com turned our reader away again when we went back to check it. Not based on using the product, and shorter than our full reviews. How we review and grade.

Keep Avira, or make your own?
Keep it
To replace Avira you would be making an engine that recognises new malware as it appears. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 8 of the 14 other antivirus apps grade higher.
What you could make
- Ad and tracker blocking: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- An engine that recognises new malware as it appears.
- Servers in dozens of countries, kept fast and private.
- A password vault, the last thing anyone should make for themselves.
- Apps for Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
What this rests on. Avira’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
