Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.2

GPA, above 113 of the 123 other to-do list apps we grade

beorg is a task manager, outliner and agenda app for iPhone and iPad that stores everything in plain text Org mode files. Files sync through iCloud, Dropbox, WebDAV or a folder from another app, so the same tasks and notes can be opened in Emacs and other Org mode editors on a computer. The core app is free, and extra features are sold as individual extensions or all together in a beorg Premium subscription.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about beorg, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Encryption, saved searches and timers are paid extras, and there's no sharing.

Best for Org mode files on an iPhone or iPad

beorg reads and edits Org mode files on an iPhone or iPad, the same plain-text files you open in Emacs, and the free app gives unlimited files and tasks, a weekly agenda and sync. But it's iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch only, so on a computer you're back in your own editor, and Android users are pointed to Orgzly. Encryption, saved searches and timers are paid extras, and there's no sharing.

Value for moneyAPremium unlocks every extension for $9.99 a year, about a fifth of what a year on this category's middle subscription costs. Or buy single extensions from $0.99 to $2.99 and never subscribe at all.
Free plan and trialBUnlimited files and tasks, the weekly agenda, search, subtasks, scripting and sync through iCloud, Dropbox or WebDAV, all free. You could live here. The caps are 2 task templates, and no encryption, saved searches or task timers.
FeaturesBCustom task states, priorities, tags, scheduled and deadline and repeating dates, a folding outliner, an agenda beside your iOS calendars, and a Scheme language for your own filters. No sharing or collaboration on record, though.
Ease of useA4.87 from 1,042 App Store ratings. Worth saying those raters mostly knew Org mode before they arrived: you pick where files sync and get on with it.
Platforms and integrationsCiPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, and that's it. No Mac, Windows, Android or web app. The files sync through iCloud, Dropbox, WebDAV or Box, so the same files open in Emacs on a computer.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who beorg is for

  • Fits if you already keep your life in Emacs Org mode and want those files on your phone
  • Works for people who want tasks in plain text files stored wherever they like

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you've never touched Org mode and just want a simple list
  • Not for you if you want the same app on your Mac, PC or Android, as it's iPhone, iPad and Watch only
  • Too light for sharing a list with anyone, since there's no collaboration on record
  • Watch out: encryption, Box sync, saved searches, task timers and more than 2 templates are paid, at $9.99 a year or $0.99 to $2.99 each

Good to know

Good for

  • Emacs Org mode users who want their files on iPhone and iPad
  • People who want tasks kept in plain text files they control
  • Choosing where data is stored: iCloud, Dropbox or WebDAV

Worth knowing

  • It is offered for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch only. On a computer the files are edited in another Org mode editor such as Emacs, and the vendor points Android users to Orgzly.
  • Encryption, Box sync, saved searches, task timers, properties and UI themes are paid extensions, and the free version allows 2 task templates.
  • Premium is a subscription, $1.49 monthly or $9.99 annually on the US App Store; single extensions are separate in-app purchases.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Your call

A to-do list at its plainest is tasks with dates, repeats and a box to tick.

You could make the core of beorg for yourself: tasks, notes and templates. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. At $17.88 a year it costs less than the weekend it would take to replace, which is the argument for keeping it.

What you could make

  • Tasks, notes and templates: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A real app for iOS. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It plugs into other products, iCloud, Dropbox and WebDAV among them.
  • Hooks into the device itself: an Apple Watch app.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. beorg’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
