Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 12 of the 57 other AI assistants we grade
Big-AGI is a browser-based AI workspace that runs on your own API keys for more than 30 cloud and local model services. Its Beam feature sends one prompt to several models in parallel and can merge their replies into a single answer, and each request can be tuned and inspected in detail. The code is open source under the MIT License and can be self-hosted, while the hosted app is free and a Pro subscription adds cloud backup and sync.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Big-AGI, taken from its own pages and our grades.
- 1
Best for checking one answer across several AI models
Big-AGI is a browser workspace for people who already hold API keys.
- 2
Paid plans start at $9 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $9 per month, billed yearly ($108), or $10.99 billed monthly (Pro).
- 3
There is a free plan
Big-AGI Free is the full hosted workspace at no cost, with multi-model Beam and Personas, used with your own API keys. The MIT-licensed code can also be self-hosted.
- 4
It runs on Web
Web.
- 5
Beam and Merge
Beam sends one prompt to between 2 and 24 models in parallel, each answering without seeing the others. Merge then fuses the replies into one answer with built-in or custom merge prompts.
- 6
Your own keys for 30+ services
Connects directly to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Mistral, DeepSeek, OpenRouter, Azure and AWS Bedrock, and to local servers such as Ollama and LM Studio, with no markup on usage.
- 7
Precise model controls
Effort, temperature, verbosity, reasoning budget, search and tools can be set per request or per persona across more than 800 models.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 12 of 57
That is against the other AI assistants we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Big-AGI you would be making an AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for checking one answer across several AI models
Big-AGI is a browser workspace for people who already hold API keys. Its Beam feature sends one prompt to up to 24 models at once, then merges the replies into one answer. The hosted app is free and the code is open source, but no model comes with it, chats stay in one browser unless you pay for Pro, and there's no desktop or phone app.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Pro is $9 a month billed yearly, bang in the middle of this category, and what it buys is cloud backup, sync and 1 GB of storage. Not model access, which is still your own keys on top. That's a lot for sync, so skip it. |
| Free plan and trial | A | The hosted workspace costs nothing, Beam and Personas included, and the MIT-licensed code is yours to run. Do remember what free means here: the app is free, and each provider bills you for what you use. |
| Features | C | Beam fires one prompt at up to 24 models and Merge fuses the replies. It's a smaller job, though: no model of its own, no voice, no mobile app, and sync is held back for Pro. |
| Ease of use | C | Nothing happens until you've pasted in a key from OpenAI, Anthropic or another provider, so there are accounts to sort out before your first chat. Then there's a dial for everything. No rating on record either. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | Browser only. It installs as a web app and that's your lot, with no native desktop or phone app. The 30+ services it connects to are model providers, which is how it gets a brain, not reach into your other tools. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Big-AGI is for
- Fits if you hold API keys for several providers and want to compare their answers
- Works for self-hosters and IT teams who want an MIT-licensed chat interface
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you've never made an API key, because nothing here works without one, and each provider bills you
- Not for you if you want a phone or desktop app, as it only runs in the browser
- Tight if you're staying free and switch between devices, since chats stay in one browser without Pro
- Watch out: Pro's $9 a month buys backup, sync and 1 GB of storage, not any model access
- Watch out: team management and SLAs are only on a custom Business plan with no public price
Good to know
Good for
- People with API keys for several providers who compare answers
- Checking an important answer across models before acting on it
- Self-hosters and IT teams that want an MIT-licensed chat interface
Worth knowing
- No model access is included: every tier needs your own API keys, and each provider bills usage directly.
- Cloud backup and multi-device sync are Pro features. On Free and Open, chats stay in the browser on one device.
- It runs in the browser and installs as a web app; the site lists no native desktop or mobile apps.
- Team management and SLA guarantees are offered only through a custom Business plan with no public price.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Big-AGI you would be making an AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 35 of the 57 other AI assistants grade higher. It costs $108 a year. Big-AGI is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.
What you could not
- An AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make.
- It plugs into other products, OpenAI, Anthropic and Google Gemini among them.
What this rests on. Big-AGI’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
