Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.0

GPA, above 4 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade

Braintoss is a capture app for iPhone and Android that sends a thought to your own email inbox in one tap. A note can be typed, spoken and transcribed on the phone, or photographed, and it can also go to extra email addresses or a webhook. Version 10 is a rebuilt native app on both platforms with companion apps for Apple Watch and Wear OS, sold as a one-time purchase with no subscription, in-app purchases or ads.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Braintoss, taken from its own pages and our grades.

After that the app opens on the capture screen and one tap sends it.

The report card

Best for firing a thought at your own inbox in one tap

Braintoss sends a spoken, typed or photographed thought to your email inbox in one tap. It's $2.99 once on iPhone and $2.79 on Android. There's no free version or trial, nothing stays organized in the app, there's no computer or web version, version 10 won't install on an iPhone 7 or older, and the vendor says the old Android version's service is failing.

ToolGPA report cardBraintossGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyA$2.99 once on the App Store, $2.79 on Google Play, and that's the end of it: no subscription, no in-app purchases, no ads, in a category whose middle plan is $6 every month. On iPhone, Family Sharing covers up to six people.
Free plan and trialFNothing is free. No free version and no trial, so you pay up front to find out whether it suits you. It's a small bet at that price, but it's still a bet.
FeaturesDOne narrow function, getting a thought somewhere else: voice transcribed on the phone, photos with their text read, extra inboxes, webhooks, a history and an offline queue. It keeps nothing itself, though. Without an inbox or a to-do app at the other end there's no product here.
Ease of useBSetup is typing in your email address. After that the app opens on the capture screen and one tap sends it. No store rating on record to go by, but there's nothing in the listing to learn either.
Platforms and integrationsCPhones and wrists only: iPhone and Android, with Apple Watch and Wear OS apps and home screen widgets on Android. No Windows, Mac or web app, and version 10 won't install on an iPhone 7 or older.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.0

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Braintoss is for

  • Fits if your email inbox is already where you work through your to-dos
  • Works for feeding a to-do app through its email address or your own webhook

Who it is not for

  • Not for you if you want to try before you buy, as there's no free version or trial
  • Skip it if you want notes kept and sorted in one app, because Braintoss sends them on and keeps no hosted archive
  • Too light for anyone who captures from a laptop, since there's no Windows or web app and the iPad app isn't verified for macOS
  • Watch out: version 10 won't install on an iPhone 7 or older, and the vendor says the old Android version 8 service is failing

Good to know

Good for

  • People who treat their email inbox as the place to process to-dos
  • Capturing a thought by voice, photo or text in a few seconds
  • Feeding notes into a to-do app through its email address or a webhook

Worth knowing

  • There is no free version or trial: the app is paid up front, at $2.99 on the US App Store and $2.79 on Google Play.
  • Captures are delivered to email or a webhook rather than organized in the app, and the vendor says it keeps no hosted archive of them.
  • There is no Windows or web app, and the App Store marks the iPad app as not verified for macOS.
  • Version 10 cannot be installed on an iPhone 7 or older, and the vendor says the service behind the old Android app (version 8) is failing.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Braintoss you would be making dictation that types into any app on your computer. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 136 of the 147 other note-taking apps grade higher. It costs $2.79, paid once.

What you could make

  • Notes: an app builder makes this well.

What you could not

  • Dictation that types into any app on your computer.
  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • Hooks into the device itself: an Apple Watch app, a Wear OS app and widgets.

What this rests on. Braintoss’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
