Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.4

GPA, above 10 of the 14 other webinar and live streaming tools we grade

Castr is a live streaming service for multistreaming one encoder feed to YouTube, Facebook, Twitch, LinkedIn and custom RTMP or SRT destinations, and for hosting the video on your own site. Every plan also includes cloud recording, an embeddable player, 24/7 TV-style playout of pre-recorded video and a paywall. It is aimed at broadcasters, churches, schools and event producers rather than webinar hosts, and takes its feed from encoders or cameras, with a browser switcher for mixing them.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Castr, taken from its own pages and our grades.

You set up an encoder such as OBS or a camera, add each destination and embed the player, which takes some know-how.
From our grade for ease of use

It's for broadcasters, though: you bring the encoder, since the browser switcher is turned on only if you ask.

  6. 6

    Video hosting and player

An embeddable player with analytics, video storage from 100 GB, and unlimited viewers within each plan's bandwidth allowance.

  7. 7

The report card

Best for multistreaming plus hosting your own video

Castr takes one feed from your encoder or camera and sends it to up to 30 destinations, and it also hosts the video on your own site with a player, a paywall and 24/7 TV-style playout. Starter is $16.67 a month billed yearly. It's for broadcasters, though: you bring the encoder, since the browser switcher is turned on only if you ask.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyBStarter is $16.67 a month billed annually ($199.99 a year, $19.99 by the month) and streams to 6 destinations, enough for three platforms. That's level with Restream and Ecamm, well under StreamYard's Core, and it includes hosting and a paywall.
Free plan and trialCNo free plan, but a 7-day free trial of Starter with no credit card. The other plans go straight to checkout.
FeaturesCMultistreaming to 30 destinations, hosting, a player, cloud recording, 24/7 playout and a paywall on every plan. The gaps: you bring the encoder, as the browser Cloud Production switcher is enabled by Castr on request, and recordings are kept up to three days.
Ease of useCNo App Store rating on record. You set up an encoder such as OBS or a camera, add each destination and embed the player, which takes some know-how.
Platforms and integrationsBA web service with no desktop or phone app listed. It sends to YouTube, Facebook, Twitch and LinkedIn, takes RTMP, SRT, RTSP and HLS input from OBS or cameras, and has an API on Premium.

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Castr is for

  • Great if a church or school streams services or events to several platforms
  • Handy when you want to run a 24/7 channel from pre-recorded video
  • Good for selling access to live streams behind a paywall

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want a studio in the browser without asking Castr to switch it on
  • Not for you if you've never used an encoder and don't want to learn
  • Tight if you stream a lot to your own player, since each plan has a bandwidth allowance

Good to know

Good for

  • Churches and schools streaming services or events to several platforms
  • Broadcasters running a 24/7 channel from pre-recorded video
  • Selling access to live streams behind a paywall

Worth knowing

  • Streams come in from encoder software, hardware or IP cameras; the browser-based Cloud Production switcher is enabled by Castr on request.
  • Each plan has a player-bandwidth allowance, and monthly plans get less upfront bandwidth and fewer concurrent streams than annual ones.
  • Only Starter has the 7-day trial; the other plans go straight to checkout.
  • DRM and native iOS, Android and TV apps for the Events plan are add-ons arranged with sales.
