Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 27 of the 123 other to-do list apps we grade
Chaos Control is a personal organizer for goals, projects and tasks. Incoming items go into a Chaos Box to be processed later, projects break down into tasks with checklists, and context tags group tasks by place or priority. The paid PRO tiers add a time tracker, cloud file storage and an AI assistant, and team workspaces are licensed separately. Apps are available for iOS, Android, macOS and Windows, along with a web app and a Telegram bot.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Chaos Control, taken from its own pages and our grades.
The Chaos Box idea itself is easy enough to grasp.
- 1
Best for GTD-style projects with a pay-once option
Chaos Control is a GTD organizer: dump everything in the Chaos Box, sort it into projects later, and tag tasks by place or priority, on phones, Mac, Windows and the web.
- 2
Paid plans start at $2.42 a month when paid by the year
As its pricing page puts it: $29 per year for Premium, or $6.99 billed monthly.
- 3
There is a free plan
Free to download and use, with up to 100 MB of file storage. Unlimited tasks and projects need Premium or PRO; the site does not publish the free version's task and project limits.
- 4
It runs on 5 platforms
Web, macOS, Windows, iOS and Android.
- 5
Chaos Box
An inbox for tasks, ideas and information that arrive unplanned: drop an item in to record it quickly, then process the accumulated entries when there is time.
- 6
Projects, checklists and contexts
Large goals become projects that break down into tasks with checklists. Projects are grouped into categories, and context tags group tasks by place, priority or other criteria.
- 7
Time Tracker
A timer started on a task collects time statistics for that task and by day, week and month. It is part of the PRO plans.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 27 of 123
That is against the other to-do list apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Your call
A to-do list at its plainest is tasks with dates, repeats and a box to tick.

The report card
Best for GTD-style projects with a pay-once option
Chaos Control is a GTD organizer: dump everything in the Chaos Box, sort it into projects later, and tag tasks by place or priority, on phones, Mac, Windows and the web. Premium is $29 a year, or $49.99 once. But the free version's task and project limits aren't published, the time tracker and AI need PRO, Telegram is the only integration, and App Store prices can run higher than the site's.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | B | Premium is $29 a year, which works out at $2.42 a month, the low end of this category. Forever is $49.99 once. Don't pay monthly, though: $6.99 a month is nearly three times the yearly rate. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Free to download and use with 100 MB of file storage, but unlimited tasks and projects need a paid plan and the site never says where free stops. You'll find that wall by walking into it. |
| Features | C | The GTD basics are all here: Chaos Box inbox, projects breaking into tasks with checklists, context tags. The gaps are the vendor's own, though. Time tracking, real file storage and the AI are PRO only, and team storage and AI are marked coming soon. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record, and there's a method to learn before it pays off: Chaos Box, projects, categories and contexts all want setting up. The Chaos Box idea itself is easy enough to grasp. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows and a web app, plus a Telegram bot. But Telegram is the only integration on record and there's no API mentioned. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Chaos Control is for
- Fits if you run GTD and want an inbox, projects and contexts on every device
- Works for people who'd rather pay $49.99 once than subscribe
Who it is not for
- Pricey if you pay monthly, at $6.99 against $29 for the whole year
- Skip it if you want to know the free limits up front, because the site doesn't publish them
- Not for you if you need lots of integrations, since Telegram is the only one listed
- Watch out: the US App Store charges more for some plans, like PRO 10 GB yearly at $49.99 against $39 on the site
- Tight if you want the time tracker or AI, as both need PRO from $39 a year with weekly AI caps; team storage and AI are still coming
Good to know
Good for
- People who organize work with GTD-style projects and contexts
- Buyers who prefer a one-time lifetime license to a subscription
- Keeping files and voice notes next to the tasks they belong to
- Small teams that want a flat price per workspace
Worth knowing
- The Time Tracker, cloud storage beyond 100 MB and the AI assistant are limited to the PRO plans, with weekly caps on AI requests.
- The site does not publish the free version's task and project limits.
- Some in-app prices on the US App Store are higher than on the website: PRO 10 GB yearly is $49.99 there against $39.
- Team workspaces are licensed separately, and file storage and AI for team workspaces are marked as coming soon.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Your call
A to-do list at its plainest is tasks with dates, repeats and a box to tick.
You could make the core of Chaos Control for yourself: tasks, time tracking and habit tracking. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. At $29 a year it costs less than the weekend it would take to replace, which is the argument for keeping it.
What you could make
- Tasks, time tracking and habit tracking: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
What this rests on. Chaos Control’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
