Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 72 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade
CherryTree is a free, open-source desktop note-taking app that arranges notes as nodes in a tree. Each node holds rich text, images, tables, embedded files or code with syntax highlighting, and a document is saved either as a single XML or SQLite file or as multiple files and folders. It is released under the GPL version 3 or later and has builds for Linux, Windows and macOS.
To get you started, here are 8 things to know about CherryTree, taken from its own pages and our grades.
No store rating on record, and you begin by deciding how the document is stored, XML or SQLite, one file or many.

The report card
Best for a free notes tree that lives in one file
CherryTree is a free, open-source desktop notebook for Windows, Mac and Linux where notes are nodes in a tree, holding rich text and code side by side, saved as one file or many. There's no official phone app and no sync of its own, tables take plain text only, password protection leaves an unprotected copy in a temporary folder while open, and the online manual is called old and discontinued.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | Free software under the GPL version 3 or later, in a category where the middle plan is $6 a month. Every download on the project page costs nothing, and the only money mentioned anywhere is a donation link. |
| Free plan and trial | A | Free outright: the Windows installer and portable archive, the Linux packages, the macOS installer, the lot. Nothing is held back, because there's no paid tier for it to be held back on. |
| Features | C | Nested nodes, rich text, code with syntax highlighting, images, embedded files, LaTeX and find and replace across the whole tree. The limits are the listing's own: tables take plain text only, there's no sync of its own, and password protection leaves an unprotected copy in a temporary folder while the file is open. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record, and you begin by deciding how the document is stored, XML or SQLite, one file or many. The project page also calls its own online manual old and discontinued, which isn't what you want when you're stuck. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | Computers only: Windows, Mac and Linux, with a portable Windows build and Linux packages from PPA to Flatpak and Snap. No official phone app, just a pointer to SourCherry, a third-party Android project, and no integrations on record. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who CherryTree is for
- Fits if you want notes and code snippets together in one local file
- Works for people moving out of KeepNote, Tomboy or Zim, which it imports
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you need your notes on your phone, as there's no official mobile app, only a third-party Android project
- Not for you if you rely on password protection, since an unprotected copy sits in a temporary folder while the file is open
- Too light for anyone who wants full tables, because cells only take plain text
- Watch out: there's no sync of its own, so keeping one notebook on two computers is up to you
- Watch out: the project page calls its own online manual old and discontinued, and the listing names no integrations
Good to know
Good for
- Keeping structured notes and code snippets in one local file
- Linux, Windows and macOS users who want the same notebook app on each
- Moving notes out of older outliners such as KeepNote, Tomboy or Zim
Worth knowing
- There is no official mobile app; the project page points to SourCherry, a third-party Android project.
- Password protection is available only for single-file storage, and an unprotected copy is extracted to a temporary folder while the document is open.
- Tables are limited to cells of plain text.
- The project page describes the online user manual as old and discontinued.
