Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.2
GPA, above 6 of the 123 other to-do list apps we grade
Clear is a minimalist list app controlled entirely by gestures: swipe to complete or delete, pull down to add, pinch to insert. Lists are colored as a heat map, and everyday use unlocks collectible themes, icons, fonts and sound packs. The core app is free with no ads, and a Clear Pro subscription adds reminders, repeating tasks, widgets, the Apple Watch app and cloud sync. A shared list can be joined from an iPhone, an Android phone or a web browser.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Clear, taken from its own pages and our grades.
The free app has no ads and does shared lists.
- 1
Best for bare-bones lists you swipe through
Clear is a list app with no buttons: swipe to finish a task, pull down to add one, pinch to slot one in between.
- 2
What it costs
Paid plans start at $3.99 for Clear Pro (billing period not shown on the App Store listing).
- 3
There is a free plan
Free with no ads: all 10 signature gestures, 9 themes, every icon and font, all 20 sound packs, loot drops, shared lists with real-time collaboration, Spotlight search and iCloud backup.
- 4
It runs on 3 platforms
iOS, Android and Web.
- 5
Gesture controls
Every action is a gesture: swipe right to complete, swipe left to delete, pull down to create, pinch apart to insert between two rows, and shake to undo.
- 6
Heat-map lists
Each list is colored as a heat map that highlights the most important tasks. A long press picks up an item so it can be dragged to a new position.
- 7
Shared lists
A list is shared with a link that opens in the iPhone app, the Android app or a browser with nothing to install. Edits reach every device at once, and sharing does not need Pro.
- 8
A 2.2 GPA, above 6 of 123
That is against the other to-do list apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Your call
A to-do list at its plainest is tasks with dates, repeats and a box to tick.

The report card
Best for bare-bones lists you swipe through
Clear is a list app with no buttons: swipe to finish a task, pull down to add one, pinch to slot one in between. The free app has no ads and does shared lists. But reminders, repeating tasks, widgets, the Watch app and sync between devices all need Clear Pro, whose billing terms aren't published, and Pro's sync and web app are still labeled beta. It has no projects or subtasks.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Clear Pro shows as $3.99 on the App Store with no billing period beside it, and the vendor's site gives no terms at all. Google Play shows in-app purchases up to $29.99. A price you can't pin down can't earn better than the middle. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Free with no ads, all 10 gestures, 9 themes, 20 sound packs, shared lists and iCloud backup. The cap bites, though: no reminders, no repeating tasks, no widgets and no sync between your own devices. |
| Features | C | Gestures do everything and shared lists open from a link with nothing installed, but this is lists rather than tasks: no projects, no subtasks. And the vendor's own notes say Clear Cloud sync and Clear Web are still beta. |
| Ease of use | B | 4.61 from 5,121 App Store ratings. There are no buttons to hunt for: swipe right to complete, left to delete, pull down to add, shake to undo. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | Phones, basically: iPhone and Android, with the Watch app and Clear Web both behind Pro and the web part still beta. iCloud is the only integration on record, and some shared-list controls are marked iPhone first. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Clear is for
- Fits if you want a list app with as little on screen as possible
- Works for sharing a grocery or packing list with people who don't have the app
Who it is not for
- Tight if you're staying free, because reminders, repeating tasks, widgets and the Watch app all need Clear Pro
- Skip it if you want lists kept in step across devices, as Clear Cloud sync is Pro and still labeled beta
- Too light for projects and teams, as it's simple lists with no subtasks
- Watch out: Clear Pro is $3.99 on the App Store with no billing period shown, and Google Play lists purchases up to $29.99
- Not for you if you run shared lists from Android, as some shared-list controls are marked iPhone first
Good to know
Good for
- People who want a list app with as little interface as possible
- Shared grocery or packing lists with people who do not have the app
- Users motivated by sounds, themes and unlockable rewards
Worth knowing
- Reminders, repeating tasks, archiving, widgets and the Apple Watch app all require Clear Pro.
- Cloud sync between devices and Clear Web are Pro features that are still labeled beta.
- Clear Pro's billing terms are not on the vendor's site; the App Store lists it at $3.99 and Google Play shows in-app purchases from $3.99 to $29.99.
- Some shared-list controls, such as member limits and removing people, are marked as iPhone first.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Your call
A to-do list at its plainest is tasks with dates, repeats and a box to tick.
You could make the core of Clear for yourself: tasks and templates. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call.
What you could make
- Tasks and templates: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- Several people working in it at the same moment.
- Hooks into the device itself: an Apple Watch app, widgets and the lock screen.
What this rests on. Clear’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
