2.2

GPA, above 12 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade

Coppice is a Mac app for arranging thoughts as pages on a canvas and linking them together. Each page holds rich text or an image, and following a link opens the linked page beside it, so a train of thought spreads out as a branch that can be closed and reopened later. Originally built by M Cubed Software, it has been published by High Caffeine Content on the Mac App Store since the 2026 version, as a free download with a Coppice Pro subscription.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Coppice, taken from its own pages and our grades.

No store rating on record, so we go by the listing: drag text and images onto a canvas, link them, click through.

The report card

Best for following linked ideas across a canvas on a Mac

Coppice is a Mac app for laying out thoughts as pages on a canvas, where clicking a link opens the next page beside the last. Pro is $1.99 a month or $19.99 a year, subscription only. Nobody says what's free and what needs Pro, it needs macOS 15 Sequoia or later, nothing is listed for sync or sharing, and the app changed hands in 2026.

ToolGPA report cardCoppiceGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyBCoppice Pro is $1.99 a month, or $19.99 a year, which sits in the cheapest quarter of a category whose middle plan is $6. What holds it back is that the vendor never says what Pro unlocks, so you'd be paying for a list nobody has published.
Free plan and trialCThe Mac App Store download is free, but there are caps and nobody will tell you where they are. The vendor doesn't say what needs Pro, and the previous maker's site put unlimited canvases, page folders and automatic linking behind it.
FeaturesCIt does its one thing fully: canvases that grow in every direction, pages that can sit on several of them, links that open as branches you can close and reopen, auto-linking, hotspots on images. But a page holds rich text or an image and no more, and nothing is listed for sync or sharing.
Ease of useBNo store rating on record, so we go by the listing: drag text and images onto a canvas, link them, click through. Open Quickly finds a page by name. There's nothing to set up first.
Platforms and integrationsDOne operating system, and a recent one at that: Mac only, macOS 15 Sequoia or later. No iPhone, iPad, Windows or web version, and the listing names no integrations and no API.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Coppice is for

  • Fits if you think by spreading notes out and following the links between them
  • Works for mapping the ideas behind one project, or a tabletop roleplaying session, on a Mac

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you're not on a Mac running macOS 15 Sequoia or later, as there's no iPhone, iPad, Windows or web version
  • Not for you if you want to know what's free before you start, as the vendor doesn't say what needs Pro
  • Tight if you dislike subscriptions, since Pro has no one-time purchase listed
  • Watch out: the app changed hands with the 2026 version, and the old maker has disabled purchases of the earlier version
  • Too light for notes beyond text and images, as a page holds one or the other and nothing is listed for sync or sharing

Good to know

Good for

  • Mapping out linked ideas for a project on a Mac
  • Planning a tabletop roleplaying session, a use the vendor names
  • People who think by spreading notes out and following connections

Worth knowing

  • It runs on the Mac only and requires macOS 15 Sequoia or later.
  • The vendor does not say which features need Coppice Pro. The former maker's site listed unlimited canvases, page folders and automatic linking as Pro in the earlier version.
  • Coppice Pro is sold only as a subscription, at $1.99 a month or $19.99 a year; no one-time purchase is listed.
  • The app changed hands with the 2026 version, and M Cubed Software's site has purchases of the earlier direct-download version disabled.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Your call

A notes app at its plainest is text in folders with a search box.

You could make the core of Coppice for yourself: notes and linked notes. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. At $19.99 a year it costs less than the weekend it would take to replace, which is the argument for keeping it.

What you could make

  • Notes and linked notes: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • An endless canvas that stays smooth with hundreds of things on it.
  • A real app for macOS. Something home-made would be a web page.

What this rests on. Coppice’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
