Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.2
GPA, above 6 of the 9 other law practice software we grade
CosmoLex is cloud practice management software for law firms that puts trust accounting, billing and matter management in one application. Every plan includes trust ledgers, compliance reports, online payments and a client portal, and the Pro plan adds a full general ledger with bank feeds. It is part of ProfitSolv and serves firms in the US and Canada.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about CosmoLex, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Trust accounts, bank feeds and the books need setting up, and calendar sync with Outlook and Google waits until Pro.
- 1

CosmoLex puts trust ledgers, billing, payments and matters in one app, from $49 a user a month billed yearly, and Pro adds a full general ledger.
- 2
Paid plans start at $49 a month for each person
As its pricing page puts it: $49 per user / month, billed yearly ($59 billed monthly).
- 3

Trust and business accounting
Trust ledgers with automatic transfers and holds and built-in compliance reports on every plan. Pro adds a general ledger and payables across trust, operating and business accounts.

The report card
Best for small firms that hold client money in trust
CosmoLex puts trust ledgers, billing, payments and matters in one app, from $49 a user a month billed yearly, and Pro adds a full general ledger. But Launch has no bank reconciliation, LEDES billing, intake forms or AI, which start on Core at $99, and the CRM, eSignatures and document sharing are paid add-ons.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Launch is $49 a user a month billed yearly, $59 monthly, where this category's cheaper quarter and middle both sit. Bank reconciliation, LEDES billing and intake forms need Core at $99, about twice the middle, and the general ledger needs Pro at $129. |
| Free plan and trial | C | A 10-day trial with no card. It's limited to one bank feed and leaves out the CRM and the LexShare and LexSign add-ons, and there's no free plan after it. |
| Features | C | Trust ledgers with compliance reports, time, billing, payments, matters and a client portal on every plan, and a general ledger with bank feeds on Pro. The gaps the listing shows: card payments on invoices are US only, though it sells in Canada, and sharing and eSignatures are paid add-ons. |
| Ease of use | C | We have no store rating on file for it. Trust accounts, bank feeds and the books need setting up, and calendar sync with Outlook and Google waits until Pro. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web, iPhone and Android, with Microsoft 365, Outlook, Google Calendar, QuickBooks Online, Dropbox and Zapier. No desktop app, and the open API is on Pro only. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who CosmoLex is for

- Tight if you're on Launch, which has no bank reconciliation, LEDES or split billing, intake forms, document assembly or AI
- Pricey if you want the general ledger, bank feeds, calendar sync or the open API, which are Pro only at $129 a user
- Watch out: the CRM, websites, Google Ads management and LexShare and LexSign are paid add-ons, and eSignatures may carry fees
- Not for you if you're in Canada and want card payments on invoices, which the pricing page marks as US only
- Skip it if you want a full trial, as the 10 days come with one bank feed and no CRM, LexShare or LexSign

Part 04 · Standing
Where it stands

CosmoLex's GPA of 2.2 is higher than 6 of the 9 other law practice software we grade, and level with 2.
It stands best on platforms and integrations (B, above 0 of 9) and worst on features (C, above 0).
Its paid plans start at $49 a month for each person, against a middle price of $49 for the category: 0 of the 4 others that charge start lower.
On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 2.3 out of 4. Nothing scores higher for less, though at least one tool matches that score at a lower price.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace CosmoLex you would be making client trust accounts kept the way bar rules require. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.2 is higher than 6 of the 9 other law practice software we grade. It costs $588 a year.
What you could make
- Case management, time tracking and invoicing: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Client trust accounts kept the way bar rules require.
- Live feeds from your bank, which take an agreement with each bank or a service that has them.
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
- It plugs into other products, Microsoft 365, Microsoft Outlook and Google Calendar among them, and has an API.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
What this rests on. CosmoLex’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
