Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.2

GPA, above 66 of the 74 other calendar and scheduling apps we grade

Crab Fit is a free tool by Ben Grant for finding a time that suits a group. Someone creates an event with possible dates and a time range and sends the link around; each person marks when they are free, and the results update live as a heat map of the group's availability. No account is needed. The code is open source under the GNU GPLv3 and can be self-hosted, and the project is supported by donations.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Crab Fit, taken from its own pages and our grades.

No rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: one form makes an event, and you can leave the name blank and let it invent one.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for finding a time a whole group is free

Crab Fit finds a time a group is free: you pick some dates, send a link, everyone marks when they're free, and a heat map shows the overlap.

  2. 2

    It is free

Crab Fit has no paid plan at all. Free with no account. The privacy policy says the service is provided at no cost, and the site asks for donations so that it can stay free for everyone.

  3. 3

    It runs on 2 platforms

Web and Android, with a browser extension too.

  4. 4

    Events created in one form

Name the event or leave the name blank to have one generated, pick specific dates or days of the week, drag out a time range and choose a time zone. There is no sign-up step.

  5. 5

    Live availability heat map

Responses appear live on a heat map where darker cells mean more people are free. Hovering or tapping a slot shows who is available, and names can be clicked to view people individually.

  6. 6

    Google and Outlook calendar import

When entering availability you can sync with Google Calendar or Outlook Calendar, or reuse a recent event. Importing overwrites the availability you had already entered.

  7. 7

That is against the other calendar and scheduling apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card

Best for finding a time a whole group is free

Crab Fit finds a time a group is free: you pick some dates, send a link, everyone marks when they're free, and a heat map shows the overlap. It's free, with no account for anyone. It does only that: it won't send an invite or book the slot, events are deleted after 3 months of inactivity, there's no iPhone app, and the Chrome extension was removed.

ToolGPA report cardCrab FitGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAIt costs nothing, and there's no paid tier above it. One plan at $0 covers the web tool, the Android app and the browser extensions, with the project running on optional donations.
Free plan and trialAFree with no account, for you and for everyone you send the link to. The privacy policy says the service is provided at no cost, and no cap is listed. Events are deleted after 3 months of inactivity.
FeaturesCFinding a time is the whole of it: a live heat map, time zones per person, Google and Outlook import, an optional password. That's a smaller job than a calendar does. It won't send the invite, book the slot or keep a record past 3 months idle.
Ease of useBNo rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: one form makes an event, and you can leave the name blank and let it invent one. Nobody you send it to signs up for anything.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb, an Android app, and extensions for Firefox and for Safari on Mac, with availability pulled in from Google Calendar or Outlook. No iPhone app is listed, and it won't work offline.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Crab Fit is for

  • Fits if you're picking a time for a one-off thing with friends, a club or coworkers
  • Works for groups where nobody wants to create another account

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you need a record that lasts, because events are deleted after 3 months of inactivity
  • Not for you if you want it to send invites or book the slot, as it only shows when people are free
  • Skip it if your group wants a phone app on iPhone: the mobile app is Android only
  • Watch out: the Chrome extension was removed, leaving Firefox and Safari on Mac, and it won't work offline
  • Watch out: importing from Google or Outlook overwrites the availability you'd already entered

Good to know

Good for

  • Friends, clubs and coworkers picking a time for a one-off event
  • Groups whose members should not have to create accounts
  • People who want to run their own scheduling poll server

Worth knowing

  • Events are deleted after 3 months of inactivity, so it does not keep a long-term record.
  • The mobile app is for Android only; no iPhone app is listed.
  • Extensions are offered for Firefox and for Safari on Mac. The project's code notes that the Chrome extension was removed.
  • It needs a connection: the app's own message says a Crab Fit does not work offline.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

Crab Fit is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.2 is higher than 66 of the 74 other calendar and scheduling apps we grade.

What you could make

  • Surveys: an app builder makes this well.

What you could not

  • A real app for Android. Something home-made would be a web page.

What this rests on. Crab Fit’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
