Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.6

GPA, above 15 of the 35 other journaling apps we grade

Daily You is an open-source diary app for Android. Each day gets a log with a mood, text formatted in Markdown and optional photos, and the app shows how mood changes over time. It works without an internet connection or an account, keeps entries on the device or in a folder you choose, and can import from other diary apps. The app is free with no ads or locked features, is licensed under GPL-3.0 and is supported by donations.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Daily You, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Each day gets a mood, some Markdown text and a few photos, kept on your phone or in a folder you pick.

Best for a free, private diary on Android

Daily You is a diary for Android with no account, no ads, no subscription and no internet needed. Each day gets a mood, some Markdown text and a few photos, kept on your phone or in a folder you pick. But it's Android only, and with no cloud a second device means syncing a folder yourself. The README doesn't mention Google Play either.

ToolGPA report cardDaily YouGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAFree and open source under GPL-3.0, with no paid plan, no ads and nothing held back, where paid journal apps here sit around $4.17 a month in the middle. Donations only, if you'd like to say thanks.
Free plan and trialAThe whole app is free, with no ads, no account and no locked features, and no cap an ordinary person would ever meet. There's nothing to upgrade to.
FeaturesCThe basics of a diary: a log a day with a mood, Markdown text and photos, a mood statistics page, a gallery and a reminder at a random time. The gap is in its own README, though. There's no account and no cloud, so a second device means syncing a folder yourself, and imports may not come over one to one.
Ease of useCNo rating on record, and getting it is the awkward part: the README points to F-Droid, IzzyOnDroid or a GitHub APK and mentions no Google Play listing. Once it's on, there's no account and you just write, though you do pick where the data lives.
Platforms and integrationsDOne operating system: Android 7.0 or newer, and that's it. No iPhone, desktop or web build, and no integrations at all.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.6

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Daily You is for

  • Fits if you're on Android and want a diary with no account, ads or subscription
  • Works for people who want their data in a folder they control

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you have an iPhone or want to write on a laptop, as it's Android only
  • Not for you if you want your diary to sync by itself, because there's no cloud service
  • Tight if you only install apps from Google Play, since the README lists F-Droid, IzzyOnDroid and GitHub
  • Watch out: imports from other diary apps may not come over one to one
  • Watch out: there are no integrations, and it needs Android 7.0 or newer

Good to know

Good for

  • Android users who want a diary with no account, ads or subscription
  • People who want a mood recorded alongside each day's entry
  • Writers who format notes in Markdown and keep their data in a folder they control

Worth knowing

  • Android only: releases contain Android APKs for Android 7.0 or newer, with no iOS, desktop or web build.
  • There is no account or cloud service; using it on a second device relies on a folder you sync yourself or on backup and restore.
  • The README offers F-Droid, IzzyOnDroid and GitHub downloads and does not mention a Google Play listing.
  • Imports from other apps may not be one-to-one, because Daily You has different features.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

Daily You is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

What you could make

  • Daily notes, mood tracking and Markdown: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A real app for Android. Something home-made would be a web page.

What this rests on. Daily You’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
