Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 10 of the 24 other presentation tools we grade
Deckset is a presentation app for Mac, iPhone and iPad that builds slides from a plain-text Markdown file. On a Mac the notes are written in any text editor and the slides update on save, while the iOS app has its own editor. Themes set the layout and typography, and the app handles code, formulas, diagrams, presenter notes and export to PDF, images or HTML.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Deckset, taken from its own pages and our grades.
If you live in Markdown, headings become slides and you're away.

The report card
Best for turning Markdown notes into slides on a Mac
Deckset is a Mac and iPhone app that turns a Markdown text file into themed slides that refresh every time you hit save, and on a Mac it costs $35 once, with no subscription. But it's Apple only, the iPhone and iPad app is a separate purchase the Mac license doesn't cover, you write in a separate editor, no visual editing or collaboration is on record, and free updates stop at the 2.x line.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | $35 once for the Mac app, good on up to four of your own computers, with free updates through the 2.x line. Presentation tools here sit at $9.99 a month in the middle, so that's under four months of a typical subscription and then nothing. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free plan. The Mac trial is a plain download with no card, and the site says there's no time limit on it. The iPhone and iPad app downloads free but needs an in-app purchase from $2.99 a month. |
| Features | C | Markdown in, themed slides out, and it finishes that job: 25-plus themes, highlighted code, TeX formulas, Mermaid diagrams, presenter notes, build steps and a rehearsal timer. It is a smaller job than the rest of this category, with no visual editing or collaboration, and the iOS app cannot edit every theme setting. |
| Ease of use | C | No App Store rating on record. If you live in Markdown, headings become slides and you're away. On a Mac, though, you write in a separate text editor, and Deckset's own directives for columns, backgrounds and build steps take some reading first. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | One family of devices: Mac, iPhone and iPad, with no Windows, Android or web version on the site, and the Mac licence doesn't cover the iOS app. It does work with Obsidian and Mentimeter, and Claude Code or Codex can draft the file for you. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Deckset is for
- Fits if your notes are already in Markdown and you want slides without redoing them
- Works for talks full of code, formulas or diagrams, on a Mac for $35 once
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you're on Windows or Android, as it's Apple devices only
- Not for you if you like dragging boxes around a slide, because here you type and the theme decides
- Pricey if you want it on a Mac and an iPad, since the iOS app is a second purchase at $19.99 a year or $44.99 once
- Too light for teams editing a deck together, as no collaboration is on record
- Watch out: free updates stop at the 2.x line, and the iOS app can't yet edit every theme setting
Good to know
Good for
- People who already write notes in Markdown and want slides from them
- Technical talks with code, formulas and diagrams
- Mac users who prefer a one-time purchase to a subscription
Worth knowing
- Deckset is for Apple devices only: the site lists Mac, iPhone and iPad apps and no Windows, Android or web version.
- The Mac license does not cover the iPhone and iPad app, which is a separate App Store download with its own in-app purchases.
- A Mac license includes free updates only within the Deckset 2.x release line.
- On Mac the notes are written in a separate text editor, and the iOS app cannot yet edit every theme setting.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Deckset you could make: Markdown. What surrounds it you could not. The 2 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It costs $35, paid once.
What you could make
- Markdown: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- A slide editor.
- Apps for macOS and iOS that stay in step with each other.
What this rests on. Deckset’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
