Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 19 of the 48 other CRM tools we grade
Dex is a personal CRM for keeping up with the people you know rather than tracking deals. It pulls contacts from LinkedIn, email, calendars and messaging apps into one private database, flags job changes, and reminds you to keep in touch. It is sold as an individual subscription in two tiers, with a Team plan that adds company-wide billing and single sign-on.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Dex, taken from its own pages and our grades.
After that most of the typing is done for you.
- 1
Best for keeping up with a big LinkedIn network
Dex is a personal CRM, not a sales tool: it pulls contacts in from LinkedIn, email, calendars and WhatsApp, flags job changes and reminds you to say hello.
- 2
Paid plans start at $12 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $12 / month, billed annually ($20 billed monthly).
- 3
You can try it first
7-day free trial of Premium or Professional; a credit card is required to start it
- 4
It runs on 5 platforms
Web, macOS, Windows, iOS and Android, with a browser extension too.
- 5
LinkedIn sync and job-change alerts
The browser extension syncs your LinkedIn connections in the background and tells you when a contact changes title. Plans cap the number of synced connections.
- 6
Keep-in-touch reminders
Dex reminds you to keep in touch with people, notifies you of upcoming birthdays and important dates, and shows where the last conversation left off.
- 7
Email, calendar and messaging sync
Connects Gmail, Google Calendar, WhatsApp, Instagram and iMessage so recent interactions and meeting attendees appear on each contact. Outlook needs Professional.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 19 of 48
That is against the other CRM tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card
Best for keeping up with a big LinkedIn network
Dex is a personal CRM, not a sales tool: it pulls contacts in from LinkedIn, email, calendars and WhatsApp, flags job changes and reminds you to say hello. Premium is $12 a month on yearly billing, $20 monthly. There's no free plan, the 7-day trial wants a card, Premium stops syncing at 2,500 LinkedIn connections, and Outlook and the API need Professional at $20.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | B | Premium is $12 a month billed annually, inside the cheapest quarter of CRMs and in line with the personal CRMs it lists as rivals: Mesh at $10, Monica at $9. Pay monthly and it's $20. Outlook, mail merge and the API sit on Professional at $20. |
| Free plan and trial | D | No free plan, and the only way in is 7 days of Premium or Professional with a credit card handed over first. Dex says you aren't charged until the trial ends, so that week is your window to cancel. |
| Features | C | LinkedIn sync with job-change alerts, keep-in-touch reminders, your Gmail, calendar, WhatsApp and iMessage history on each person, notes, custom fields and an AI briefing on a contact. It covers the staying-in-touch job, and that's a smaller job than a CRM's: no deals and no pipelines, by design. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record, and the contacts only flow once you've installed the extension and connected LinkedIn, a mailbox, a calendar and your messaging apps. After that most of the typing is done for you. |
| Platforms and integrations | A | Web, Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android and a browser extension, which is the full set. It connects to LinkedIn, Gmail, Google Calendar, WhatsApp, Superhuman, Granola and Zapier, with an MCP server for AI assistants. Outlook, the API and Zapier need Professional. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Dex is for
- Fits if you know a lot of people and lose track of who you last spoke to, and when
- Works for people whose network lives on LinkedIn, as Dex syncs connections and flags job changes
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want to stay free, because there's no free plan and the 7-day trial needs a card
- Not for you if you sell for a living and need deals and pipelines, which Dex doesn't have
- Tight if you have more than 2,500 LinkedIn connections, as that's where Premium stops syncing
- Pricey if you're on Outlook or need mail merge or the API, which all need Professional at $20
- Watch out: monthly billing is $20 against $12 yearly, and Team at $40 a user is set up through Dex
Good to know
Good for
- Individuals who want to stay in touch with a large personal network
- Founders, investors and job seekers who network heavily on LinkedIn
- Students: there is a 50% discount with a school email
Worth knowing
- No free plan is listed on the pricing page, and the 7-day trial requires a credit card.
- Dex has no deals or pipelines; its makers say it is not a sales CRM.
- Outlook integration, mail merge, multiple email accounts and API or Zapier access need Professional.
- LinkedIn sync stops at 2,500 connections on Premium and 9,000 on Professional and Team.

Keep it
Nothing Dex does is plain enough to make in a weekend. The 4 things listed below take a company.
It costs $144 a year.
What you could not
- Apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- It plugs into other products, LinkedIn, Gmail and Outlook among them, and has an API.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: single sign-on.
What this rests on. Dex’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
