Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.0

GPA, above 29 of the 35 other journaling apps we grade

Diaro is a diary and notes app for Android, iPhone and iPad with a browser version called Diaro Online. Entries are organized with folders, tags and locations, can carry photos and a mood, and are searchable by keyword or date. The mobile apps store entries on the device and can be locked with a PIN or fingerprint. The paid Pro tier syncs devices and the web app through your own Dropbox account, adds export to PDF, DOCX and TXT, and removes ads.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Diaro, taken from its own pages and our grades.

It's folders and tags, so if you've ever filed anything you know how it works, and the only setup is linking your Dropbox for sync on Pro.

The report card

Best for a diary synced through your own Dropbox

Diaro is a diary with folders, tags, places, a mood and a lock. Pro costs $8.99 a year and syncs entries through your own Dropbox to your other devices and the web, though the listing's own text says $5.99 and a second $39.99 item has no term. Free shows ads and stays on one device, and the iOS app's last update was December 2023.

ToolGPA report cardDiaroGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAPro is $8.99 a year, which is 75 cents a month where the cheapest quarter of journaling apps here starts at $2.99. For that you get Dropbox sync, the web version, export to PDF, DOCX and TXT and no ads. The listing's own description says US$5.99 a year, and a second Diaro PRO item is $39.99 with no term.
Free plan and trialCFree is a whole diary on paper: unlimited entries, folders, tags, photos, mood tracking and a lock. In practice you meet the caps at once. Ads on screen, one device only, no export, and no reading your entries in Diaro Online.
FeaturesCThe basics: folders, tags, automatic geotagging, keyword search with filters, a calendar, a mood on each entry, an atlas, an on-this-day view and importers from Day One, Journey and Evernote. The gap its own store page shows: the iOS app was last updated in December 2023.
Ease of useA4.7 from about 4,500 App Store ratings, just on the bar. It's folders and tags, so if you've ever filed anything you know how it works, and the only setup is linking your Dropbox for sync on Pro.
Platforms and integrationsBBoth phones plus a browser version, Diaro Online, which is how a computer gets in. But Dropbox is the only thing it connects to, no API is listed, and reading your entries on the web needs Pro.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.0

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Diaro is for

  • Fits if you want a diary filed by folders, tags and places
  • Works for keeping synced entries in your own Dropbox account

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want an app that's updated often, as the iOS version last changed in December 2023
  • Not for you if you don't use Dropbox, since that's the only way it syncs
  • Tight if you're staying free and want your entries on a second device or in a file
  • Not for you if ads bother you and you won't pay, since the free version shows them
  • Watch out: the App Store lists Pro at $8.99 a year, its own text says $5.99, and a $39.99 item has no term

Good to know

Good for

  • People who want a simple diary organized by folders, tags and places
  • Users who prefer synced entries to sit in their own Dropbox account
  • Moving in from Day One, Journey or Evernote using the importers

Worth knowing

  • Sync between devices and Diaro Online runs through your own Dropbox account and is a Pro feature.
  • The free version shows ads, and export to PDF, DOCX or TXT needs Pro.
  • The App Store version history shows the iOS app was last updated in December 2023 (version 2.0.2).
  • The vendor's site lists no prices. The App Store in-app list shows $8.99 for a year of Pro, while the listing's own description says US$5.99 a year.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Your call

A journal at its plainest is dated entries of text and photos.

You could make the core of Diaro for yourself: daily notes and mood tracking. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. At $8.99 a year it costs less than the weekend it would take to replace, which is the argument for keeping it.

What you could make

  • Daily notes and mood tracking: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.

What this rests on. Diaro’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
